National Defense And
The Red Cross
The American Red Cross our Red Cross is an
important partner in the National Defense program
With our boys at their posts as soldiers or sailors and
with tho civilian population the Red Cross makes its
rounds day and night carrying out its humanitarian
duties
The vital assistance of this organization to the
armed forces of America has more than doubled in the
past year Much money has been donated to purchase
needed materials for tho Army camps including n million
dollars worth of athletic equipment It is our duty
as parents wives friends of our defenders and as
loyal Americans to help maintain these services by
joining the Red Cross through tho local chapter which
opens its drive November 11
Realizing the importance of the work of the Red
Cross and appreciative of the support already given by
this group Army and Navy divisions are cooperating
in the national drives for membership by setting as
their goal that every boy join the organization
One phase of Red Cross activities Includes the training
of Volunteer Nurses Aides and volunteer workers
in First Aid and Safety More than 5000 Red Cross
nurses are on active duty with United States armed
forces Thousands more must be enrolled during the
coming months Our young men In the camps and in
military and naval hospitals need the finest nursing
care wo can provide
Americans feel that they arc defending their own
land by aiding Britain and boats loaded with food
Avar equipment and clothes leave this shore ircqueiit
ly Much of the materials which have been obtained
through the Red Cross includes garments which women
of America have volunteered to make for the men
women and children who are considered as the protecting
barrier between us and Hitlers army Tho
money backing this and other defense projects of tho
Red Cross lias to come from those who love America
and who will assist by their ready giving in the coming
drive
Preparedness for any eventuality has long been the
task of th6 American Red Cross Now that National
Pefcnse places huge new burdens upon it the organization
is raising objectives and appealing for help to
carry on its increasing work

Whenever a car driver with whom we are riding
passes another car on a hill or goes over a hill in tho
middle of the road we lose confidence in him A manor
woman who doesnt know better than to do that
shouldnt be permitted to drive a car Such a person
will never make a good driver
We may be lacking in certain elements that makeup
a poetic soul but wo can find nothing in a winter
afternoon that is either beautiful or enjoyable Tho
landscape is bleak the trees are bare Tho sky is overcast
and everything gives the impression that nature Is
merely waiting marking time until spring comes
If Japan is smart she will not allow herself to be
a cats paw and rake Hitlers chestnuts out of tho fire
Japan cant afford to get into war with tho United
States Friendly relations with the United States are
worth more to Japan than are friendly relations with
Hitler even though Hitler may have promised Japan to
secure for her the East Indies
Fall is too brief for our liking Had we the privilege
of rearranging the seasons schedules wo would
have four months fall and but two months of winter
Most people we know could get their fill of winter in
two months
A physical beauty judge is responsible for the statement
that a beautiful foot is a rarity even among beautiful
women We never thought of it before but it recalls
that we have icon mighty few bare feet that could
lay any claim to beauty

The Adult Problem
Y THOMAS HASTWELL
We frequently hear mentioned today what is referred
to as Tho Youth Problem Those who talk
glibly of tho Youth Problem seem to feel that the
conditions which they deplore are created by the young
people No doubt there is need for a great deal of work
to be done if many young people are to be saved from
the error of their way But in my opinion tho place to
begin such work is with the adults who have charge of
the rearing and the early training of the young people
This is the beginning of the youth problem Unless it is
corrected and the work of salvage of undirected and
misdirected young people will go on and on and never
endt The home is the key In it is laid the foundation
of every young life that comes within its circle In it
is built the character of the men and women that are
to be Here example rather than precept forms and
shapes lives and puts into them the character that is
like tho temper in fine steel the character that fits
them to copo with the temptations of the world The
problem is not a Youth Problem The problem is an
Adult Problem the building of a Christian home in
which Christian characters can be built

Finds It Pays
To Advertise
IJY GEORGE PECK
It is sort of a paradox that certain
departments and bureaus of
the United States Government and
certain individuals c o n n ected
therewith should be wielding an
axe over the head of tho advertising
business while at one and
tho same time other departments
of the same government are on
record as endorsing the selfsame
business
Recently in this column wo put
in a plug for the purchase of Defense
Bonds Wed like to make
another right here If you have
not purchased any as yet we urge
you to do so if you have taken
on some of these bonds we exhort
you to buy more of them
Newspapers in every state of the
Union cooperated to the full in
printing our former effort It is
our pleasure eacli week to read
several hundred newspapers and
it lias been a delight to witness
the splendid manner in which the
press of tho nation lias rallied
round the Government in promoting
the sale of these bonds
We received a letter from tho
Treasury Department regarding
this article advocating the purchase
of Defense Bonds part of
which wo quote In our efforts
to stimulate the purchase of Defense
Savings Bonds and Stamps
we are gratified by the expressions
of helpfulness reaching us
from writers and publications
everywhere Assistance like yours
is of great value to tho Treasury
Your cooperation in the
Defense Savings Program is greatly
appreciated and I know we
can count on your continued interest
in this vital longpull endeavorAlso we quote a part of our reply
to the Treasury Department
The cooperation of the newspaper
editors and publishers in
this matter was most gratifying
It constitutes one furher proof of
what a free unconsorcd press
not only can do but is ever will

M Despite Defeat
IIY FRANK DIXON
Tho rail by Wendell Willkie to
his party to line up for repeal of
the Neutrality Act and as he put
it to wipe out the ugly smudge
of obstruction and isolationism
from his party assumed for the
time being precedence in the news
over the debate In Congress regarding
the Neutrality bill and
even the war itself
Mr Wlllkies message was an
appeal to his party to abandon
the policy of isolationism and to
rally to the repeal of tho Neutrality
Act and to permit the nation
to arm its merchant ships The
message was signed by over one
hundred of Mr Wlllkies party
leaders
In Mr Willkie the country has
one of those rare individuals
whom the defeat for tho office of
president of tho United States has
not eliminated from the headlines
Mr Willkie is as much in the
headlines today as he was the
morning after tho Philadelphia
convention
In a recent magazine article Mr
Willkie stated that he may bo the
Republican presidential nominee
in 1944 if he fits tho times
In this connection it should be
noted that though Mr Willkie has
given generous aid to President
Roosevelt there is no evidence
that he has received any encouragement
or favors from tho administration
There Is no evidence
that Mr Willkie seeks or even
has ever sought such favors Asa
consequence he is wholly independent
both in respect to tho
Democratic party and the Republican
party
Being in this position he is
qualified to think with less danger
and less liklihood of partisanship
on matters in which partisanship
might easily enter
For this reason his appeal to his
party to abandon its policy of
isolationism and remove tho barrier
of full aid to Britain may b e
assumed to be the conclusion of a
man whose thinking is not biased
or tinged with tho policies of any
particular political party
And hero is the thing that is
apt to happen When 1944 rolls
around Mr Willkie may emerge
as the most dominant leader both
of his party and tho Democratic
party That all depends upon what
happens between now and 1944
At tiie present moment no one
can even hazard a guess The
thing that does stand out clear at
the present moment is that if Mr
Willkie does have ambitions for
the presidency lie is departing
radically from the conventional
and beaten path of politicians
Instead of seeking to find out
what tho majority want and then
carrying tile banner for them he
is blazing the trail for the majority
to follow Either this or ho
is shrewd enough to know that
the position lie calls upon his party
to trtko will by 1944 come
to be recognized as tho best and
wisest course and he will be recognized
for his clear thinking and
leadership because of it He may
be taking a long look ahead and
in doing so ho is willing to suffer
the storm of opposition today
which in the light of conditions
will be forgotten tomorrow
Whatever the outcome it is an
interesting chapter in American
political life
ing to do to help in the National
Defense Program or in any other
program vital to tho welfare
of the American people
Right now the Navy Department
is conducting a paid advertising
campaign in American newspapers
in an endeavor to get recruits
for tho Navy This would
seem to indicate that our Navy
Department believes in the efficacy
of advertising It is our
pleasure to report that apparently
this campaign is a success
Secretary of tho Navy Knox has
sent a roundrobin letter to newspaper
publishers commenting on

At the Firemens Banquet last week John Ballln
ger really took advantage of the fact that four or five
of the boys in the double quartet were football players
in training and on a special diet and could not eat

We wouldnt say for sure but we believe that John
ate five pieces of pie with cream when all we got was
an extra stalk of celery
Sometimes we get tired of giving giving giving

asks us to join that will be one time wo wont complain
because we can think of no other worthier cause
that needs our support

jump out of bed like a flash when he cant hear it
ring for ten minutes on a week day when he has to getup

LETTER FROM ARMY BOY
A letter received by a friend of Alfred W Cook
who is in the army and stationed at Fort Mills in the
Phillippine Islands states that it will probably be about
two more years before he can come home He says
I wish I were back over there because Im really getting
lonesome and It is so hot over here I wish I
had some of that cold weather over there Young Cook
also writes that he and the other boys have a good
time when they go to Manilla and that he has seen
things on the Island that ho never dreamed of seeing
He sends his regards to all his friends <
