On Graduation
Graduation will soon be here in high schools and colleges and
the last minute flurry that customarily accompanies this season sweats
the higher ups about as much as the midnight oil gets those who prepare
for the final examinations
A school superintendent and an editor of n certain newspaper
once got together and had a hearttoheart talk over a subject that
caused the school head no little worry nd concern
The difficulty arose over the fact that three members of the
graduating class of 60 had not done satisfactory work during their
last year and were not entitled to graduate
The editor volunteered the following comment It seems to me
that there is only one thing you can do and that is to not permit them
to graduate To do so would not only make liars out of the faculty
and the school board but would be an Injustice to the pupil as well
who will go out of school with the feeling that his slipshod indifferent
incompetent work got by In school and will likewise throughout
life
We cant do that the superintendent said if we fail to pass
these three their parents will be furious and the school will be condemned
bitterly The parents will charge that the teachers have not
done their part that their children are not lazy arc not shiftless
They will charge this even though we have sent letter after letter in
addition to report cards to the home explaining that the child Is not
doing good work in school and asking for assistance to get the pupil
to take his school seriously and get to work They will charge this
ven though 57 of the class have done good work and made the required
grades and only three have not We feel that the community
would sympathize with the failed students and the faculty would not
be supported in their effort to require in all Instances passing grades
This same situation exists in many schools The school faculty
feels its inability io convince many parents that their children are
wasting their time in school and are not working as they should Too
many parents refuse to believe the truth about the matter and exonerate
the child by Uirowing all the blame upon the teachers The
child knowing this welcomes an alibi for its laziness or inability for
application and makes even less effort The teachers in many cases
after having exhausted all efforts to accomplish results with a pupil
indifferent to learning Incapable of learning or too lazy to learn finally
give up and accept the path of least resistance
The above is not true of all schools it is not true of all parents
it is not true of all students but from rather wise Inquiry too much
of it exists It is unfortunate indeed since the pupil after all is the
one who suffers for it The parents vanity is satisfied when the child
graduates but the diploma the child receives means nothing when the
real values of an education are considered
The remedy is that requirements should be adhered to from the
iirst grade up A faculty of a school cant do a slipshod Job in the
matter of making only deserved promotions through the grades and
then the last moment clamp down and require honest work and honest
grades
After all the greatest failure isnt the public failure that comes
with failure to graduate with ones class The greatest failure is for a
young person to complete school thinking that shiftless and indifferent
work laziness and sloppy preparation of lessons can get by and
ones friends and the community be deceived by it This is easily the
greatest failure as far as the individual life is concerned

Weekly Sermon
Only A Christian World Can Be Warless
It is a common thing these days when onehalf of the world is
at war to hear the folly of war condemned and the question raised
as to why a Christian civilization cannot put a stop to the cruel and
wasteful folly of war A Christian civilization could and would make
an end of all war in the world It is because the civilizations of the
world are not Christian that we have war in the world today There
are throughout the country many different organizations and movements
that have as their motivating spirit the outlawing of war They
are all worthy efforts Their very motive makes them worth while
But the only thing that is ever going to end war on earth is the spirit
of Christ in the hearts of men and nations This alone can stop war
There is no substitute for it no organization it matters not how powerful
it may become can of itself put an end to war Men will continue
to experiment and try substitutes but substitutes will not end
war The freedom from war and the attitude toward war in the world
will contnlue in exact relation to the degree of real Christianity in
the world The first step necessary for a warless world is a Christian
world
