Fresh Air Parties
Plan a fabulous outdoor soiree in your yard with these tips on
grilling, games, food & fun.
By: Christie Bohm Chase, Staff Writer
Warm weather parties have a wonderful air
of casualness about them. Outdoor gatherings
are less stress, less mess and often quicker to
throw together than indoor parties. Whether
you have a small patio area or an expansive
lawn, it is possible to plan a party that fits your
space. Using the following tips on alfresco
entertaining, get ready to throw open your
doors and move your soiree out under the big
blue sky.
All Decked Out
With trees, shrubs, patios, lawns, potted
plants and gardens as the setting, very little is
needed to enhance your outdoor decor for a
party. A few inexpensive touches can help bring
a festive feel to your yard.
•Add to your outdoor seating by bringing
your indoor furniture into the yard.
Group vignettes of seats with a coffee or
end table for people to set their drinks.
•To keep guests cooler, create seating
arrangements in the shade under trees,
an arbor, a porch or umbrellas.
• If you are short of serving space, borrow
or create your own. If you have saw
horses, lay any flat surface across them
and cover with a tablecloth.
•If your outdoor space is small, opt to
serve food iri the house buffet style and
have guests head outdoors to eat.
•A picnic blanket with colorful pillows on
the ground is inviting for younger guests.
•White Christmas lights strung in the
trees and around deck railings, or
hanging Chinese paper lanterns create
an invitinq and warm ambiance in any
yard.
•Terra-cotta pots can hold centerpiece
flowers and also utensils, napkins, and
even food.
•Colorful bandanas are perfect napkins,
place mats or table runners at summer
barbecues.
•Use seashelis to help hold things down
on a windy day.
•Carve holes into apples or other firm
produce for perfect candieholders.
•Set out insect repellent and burn
citronella candles so your guests stay
comfortably bug-free.
Hats Off To The Chef
Like decorating, party feasting should be
easy on the host. Many people are happy to
bring side dishes to an outdoor event. If you
like the idea of a potluck party, simply ask your
guests to bring a salad, dessert, appetizer or
beverage. Potluck parties help cut down on the
cost to the host. Here are a few more food tips
to help the feast turn out to be a success.
• Position the grill so that smoke does not
blow onto seated guests and keep it
away from where small children are
playing.
•Buy more ice than you think that you
need, because some of it will melt. For a
rolling beverage cart, add ice to a child's
wagon and nestle drinks into it.
• When serving finger foods such as
barbecue ribs, set out finger cleaning
bowls. Fill small salad bowls with water
and a few floating lemon slices.
• For easy cleanup, opt for disposable
dishes and utensils and set up multiple
trash cans outdoors.
• To prevent misplacing of beverages,
provide your guests with wine charms or
personalized beverage koozies.
• Display food in a shaded area and keep
food in cooler or refrigerator until a few
moments before serving.
• Know the proper temperature for serving
beef, poultry and fish. Check food just
before removing from the grill.
Easy Ice Cream Sandwiches
Popular with both kids and adults, there is
nothing like ice cream on a hot afternoon.
These easy-to-make ice cream sandwiches will
be a hit at your party. For more great recipes
visit www.kraftfoods.com, or
www.hormel.com.
Ingredients:
2 cups vanilla ice cream, slightly softened
H2 cup chopped cocktail peanuts
chopped Baker's semisweet chocolate
crushed Oreo Cookies
large chocolate chip cookies (J'or crust)
Mix vanilla ice cream with chopped peanuts,
chocolate, and cookies. Place in freezer for 20
minutes or until firm enough to hold its shape.
Spoon about 2 Tbsp. of the ice cream mixture onto
bottom side of large cookie. Place second cookie
on top of ice cream, making a sandwich. Roll
edges in additional chopped peanuts or cookies.
Freeze 2 hours or until firm. Enjoy!
Water Wise
If you are fortunate enough to own a pool
and will be entertaining guests in or around the
water, take the proper precautions before
anyone gets wet to let swimmers know that
pool safety is an important part of your party
fun. Always post your pool rules in large type
somewhere near the pool, so that all swimmers
can see them. The following rules will help you
get started.
• Do not run on pool deck.
• Do not push people in the pool.
• Do not jump on others.
• No diving into an above-ground pool.
• No diving into an in-ground pool
unless it has a deep diving area (No
one should dive into water less than
five feet deep; the minimum depth
for a diving board is nine feet).
As a pool owner there are precautions that
you can take to ensure that the area
surrounding your pool, as well as the water
itself, is clearly marked and safe for swimmers.
• Use a float line to mark the locations
of the break point between shallow
and deep water
• Clearly mark water depths on the deck
and near the edge of the pool.
• Keep a first-aid kit and lifesaving
equipment nearby consisting of a long
pole with a loop on one end, a long
rope and at least one ring-shaped life
preserver.
Great Yard Games
Horseshoes
Croquet
Softball
Badminton
Sand Volleyball
Darts
As we all know, nothing ever goes
quite as planned. As long as
everyone is having fun, don't worry if
everything doesn't go as intended,
just relax and join in. Spontaneity
will make your party a success.
