The Greensheet and VOLUNTEER HOUSTON collaborate to bring you the following information
on volunteer opportunities for young people.
TAKE A STEP FORWARD by volunteering at this year's "Memory Walk" in The Woodlands on
October 17. The walk is a major annual fundraiser in the campaign to provide services to
families impacted by Alzheimer's disease and to eventually eradicate the disease altogether.
Volunteers will be needed that morning to help set up, clean up, sign walkers in, oversee a
variety of activities, and serve food. In return for their time, volunteers will be accorded free
refreshments and commemorative tee-shirts. Although the minimum age for persons
volunteering by themselves is 18, high-schoolers of any age are cordially welcome if
1 accompanied by an adult or volunteering as part of an organized youth group.
THANKSGIVING SENTIMENTS will be your stock in trade when you make greeting cards that
other volunteers will take on visits to nursing homes and hospitals on Thanksgiving Day. The
cards you create will make that special day all the more special for the folks receiving them
You can make the cards at home and mail or deliver them at your convenience to the
sponsoring organization's Galleria area office. No minimum age is involved, and this can be a
great project for individuals, families, or groups.
• A BIG WORLD could use a little of your help as a volunteer for an organization that channels
badly needed medical supplies to impoverished countries all around the globe. You can support
this ongoing life-saving project by sorting and boxing these items at a warehouse near
Westheimer and Beltway 8. The work is simple and doesn't require a great deal of physical
strength. Shifts can be scheduled on an occasional basis and can be arranged for weekdays
(during the daytime or evening) or on Saturdays. The minimum age for volunteers is normally
17, but persons as young as 12 are welcome if accompanied by an adult volunteer.
FOSTER A FELINE for an all-volunteer agency that adopts out homeless cats. If you're capable
of providing temporary room and board to a cat or kitten while other volunteers try to secure a
permanent placement, this agency wants to hear from you. Placements are arranged at special
"Adopt a Cat" stations set up at a number of cooperating pet supply stores. No minimum age is
involved.
WATCH YOURSELF GROW by helping tend a community garden that is used to produce
vegetables for organizations serving the needy. The sponsoring agency will teach you all you
need to know to seed, weed, and feed a garden successfully. Your commitment can be short-
term or ongoing and the hours are very flexible. There are community garden sites throughout
Houston from which to choose. Minimum age: none, if able to do the work needed.
FOR SELF-STARTERS: Organize a garage sale, with proceeds to be donated to any of the many
worthwhile agencies that manage holiday season toy, food, and clothing drives for the needy. I
DID YOU KNOW that, according to a recent national poll, six out of ten volunteers say that
volunteering gives them an opportunity to learn new skills. *
