Map of Texas, now rolling off

new use of an old notion: A
straight line is the shortest dis-
tance between two points.
The Texas Highway Depart-

In its concept of short-line
mileagp computations appear-
ing on the popular map for the
first time this year. Mileages
shown in the map's mileage
chart will Indicate the shortest
distance between all principal
cities in the state. Some of
these short-line routes may in-
clude partial travel over Farm
to Market roads.
While this innovation will
have little significance for most
cross-country travelers, it will
be easily helpful In compiling
milenges for official purposes.

Senate Committee
On Wednesday, Jan. 13, Lt.
Gov. Preston Smith announced
the appointment of standing
committees for the Texa? Sen-
ate. Senator David Ratliff of
Stamford, representing the
24th Senatorial District, was
named chairman of the Com-
mittee on Counties, Cities and
Towns and vice chairman of
the Oil and Gas Committee.
The Committee on Counties,
Cities and Towns in the past
years has been the clearing
hou3e for the second largest
number of bills introduced in
the Senate. Only the State Af-
fairs Committee, of which the
Senator is also a member, re-
views more legislation. As
chairman of this committee,
Senator Ratliff will be an in-
creasingly important person in
the eyes of his fellow legisla-
tors whose bills concerning
local affairs must come be-
fore the committee.
Senator Ratliff will also be
a key figure in the fate of
Senate Bill Number 2, dealing
with compulsory pooling of oil
and gas. The bill was introduc-
ed by Senator Calhoun of Ty-
ler, chairman of the Oil and
Gas Committee. Senator Cal-
houn, as is the custom in such
cases, will relinquish his chair-
manship to the vice chairman,
Senator Ratliff, while the com-
mittee debates this important
I measure.
In addition, the Scnntor was
appointed to the committees on
Banking, Contingent Kxpense,
Insurance, Labor and Manage-
ment Relations, Water and
Conservation, Public Health

Did You Know?
That according to the Bible
if one is trying to live a
Christian life, and he is made
fun of arid being persecuted
that he should rejoice and be
glad ? Please read:
"Blessed are ye when men
shall revile you and persecute
you, and shall say all manner
of evil against you falsely for
my sake. Rejoice and be ex-'
ceeding glad for great is your
reward in heaven." Matt. 5:11-
12.
"Whosoever therefore shall
confess me before men, him
shall I confess also before my
Father which is in heaven."
Matt. 10:32.
"And fear not them that kill
the body, bi:t are not able to
kill the soul; but rather fear
him which is able to destroy
both soul and body in hell."
Matt 10:28.
"And ye shall be hated by
ail men for my name's sake:
but he that endureth until tne
end shall be saved." Matt. 10:

gressional and Judicial D'stricts
which will be concerned with
the controversial question re-
lating to legislative and con-
gressional re-apportionment.
Although the legislature has
only been in session since Jan.
12, Senator Ilatliff has already
received a large amount of cor-
respondence regarding the pro
posed legislation to legalize
parimutuel betting and Senate
Hill 8, popularly known as the
I "open saloon" bill permitting
sale of liquor by the drink.
Consistent with his past record,
Senator Ratliff remains oppos-

TYLER.—There's a limit to
even a park manager's pa-
tience. For instance: Itinerant
campers recently littered Cad-
do State Park, ignoring con-
venient trash containers. After
work, they cleaned paint brush-
es by daubing the wet bristles
aga'nst stately pine and cypress
trees. Doyle Taylor, park man-
ager, resolutely picked up the
garbage, again cautioning the
visitors about that and certain-
ly the bark redecorntion. But
they next shot a stray park pig
and brazenly roasted it over a
ca:np ite spit. Taylor, prettj
piggish by then, called on the
sheriff to deport the lot of 'em.
