Sportsmanship Of Team
During Tourney Challenged
The recently completed
first annual Albany Slow-
Pitch Softball Tourna-
ment could be described
in one word —successful.
Successful in the sense
that the tourney was well

had super prizes, was well
officiated, and was profit
able. Its success can
directly be attributed to
the countless hours of
donated time, huge
amounts of money and
materials given by vir
tually every association
player and local business
molded together by asso-
ciation president Steve
Riley.
However, with any
tournament, problems are
almost the rule rather
than the exception, and
the Albany tourney was
no different — except that
the incidents centered
around one team.
The ground rules of the
tournament were set up
well in advance. The tour
ney would be an Ameri
can Softball Association
sanctioned Class B tour
nament. The explanation
of Class B is quite simple.
Softball teams are divid
ed into classes — open. A
and B. Open division play
ers are the ones who
travel to national tourna-
ments and play the best
teams in the nation. "A"
division players vie in
statewide tourneys with
teams from major metro-
politan areas. Class "B"
are church leagues, smaU
towns, and weekend play
ers.
Former Albany Lion
head football coach and
athletic director Mike
Wheeler was contacted
about bringing a team
over from Abilene. Ac-
cording to Riley, Wheeler
was informed of the Class
B status of the tourney
and agreed to bring a
Class B team. As a former
softball teammate of
mine, while coaching in
Albany, Wheeler knew
the caliber of players local
teams have.
However, what Wheel-
er brought over was far
from a Class B team. In
stead, he put together a
group of open division all
stars —call them profes
sionals if you want to. In
other words, Wheeler
brought the Dallas
Cowboys in to do battle
against teams such as our
own Albany Lions.
Needless to say, these
guvs cleaned up on us
weekend players. They
won every game except
one by at least 20 runs in
five innings. In the cham
pionship game, they hit
six consecutive homeruns
and beat the tourney run
ner-up 22-6.
These players, includ
ing Wheeler, started -bat
ting left handed tthe right
handed players" that is' as
early as the second inning
of most contests because
they owned an insur
mountable lead. They
committed apparently in
tentional errors so their
opponent would'get a run
ner or two on base, then
"bam." make incredible
plays to get the other side,
out. They then returned
to their dugout and con
tinued their offensive as-
sault,
I would venture to say
that you could have
picked the best ten play
ers from all the other en
tries, and it still wouldn't
have been a test tor
Wheeler's siiuad.
Now, some of you may
think I have a bad case of
sour grapes. Let me say
emphatically that I do
not. As a player, I could
have care less who plays
as long as they pay their
$50 entry fee. It would
have been nice for my
team to have won, but
that's not the issue either.
they had the shaft put to
them.
I don't know about any-
one else, but I didn't work
my tail off on the field for
two weeks and during the
tournament just for the
fun of it. I did it because I
wanted area teams to say,
"Albany sure puts on a
fine tournament."
we guaranteed that all tourney
entries would be Class B.
My feeling is that the
local squads will benefit
from the profits of the
tournament, since the
money is pumped back in
to the association. Also,
by having the tourney,
the work on the local field
was speeded up and now
it's in excellent shape.
Who cares that five of
Wheeler's players played
nn a team that won third
place in the national tour
nament in Las Vegas less
than a month ago.
However, as a associ
at ion member, I feel out
raged at Wheeler's total
lack of sportsmanship. 1
feel embarrassed for the
teams we invited to plav,
holding out our little grit-
ty hand* for $50 while at
the same time guarantee
:ng that all tourney en
tries would be Class B—.
"overvo.ne will be fairly
equal :n skills and caliber
of pla.crs," Wt< said. So
they pay, and play, and
get trumped in five inn
ings and go home empty
handed and feeling like
Because Wheeler's team
was, as one association
member put it, "a ringer,"
the All Tournament selec
tion committee elected
not to bestow the All
Tournament honor on any
of Wheeler's players. I
don't necessarily agree
with this action. Since the
team was allowed in the
tourney and paid their en
try fee, I feel they should
at least have' been con
sidered. But I can sym
pathize with the commit
tee. I mean, these guys
were in a league all their
own, and to compare them
with any of the other
players would be grossly
unjust.
However, the actions of
Wheeler's squad follow
ing the announcement of
the All Tournament plav
ers w as an out and out dis
grace. It undoubtably was
the worst display of un
sportsmanlike conduct I
have ever witnessed. One
member of the team pro
ceeded to drop kick the
first place trophy from
Thursday, July 19.
home plate through the
backstop, busting the $60
award to pieces.
The only conclusion I
can draw from the actions
of Wheeler's team is that
they entered the tourna
ment with the idea of tak
ing home all the hardware
available. They surely
didn't come over to im
prove their skills, nor can
I imagine they gained a
lot of satisfaction from
stomping the daylights
out of some inferior op
ponents.
The team's reactions
following the announce
of the All Tourna
selections tend to
ment
ment
1979 — The Albony Ntw» — Pop• 7
justify this conclusion.
For instead of accepting
what they had won graci-
ously, they destroyed
what would have been
treasured by any of the
other teams entered, sim-
ply because they ap-
parently wanted more.
Every tournament will
always have a "sandbag
ger" or two entered and
in the future, the Albany
Slow-Pitch Softball Tour
nament will probably be
no different. But I feel
assured that the associ
ation will do its utmost to
see that Sunday's awards
fiasco will never again be
duplicated.
