species that are or have been
threatened with extinction somewhat
within the confines of our continent
The passenger pigeon has been wiped

the Eastern elk once ranged the
eastern portions of the U S be
tween the Alleghanies and the great
plains they had vanished completely

cess of extermination and thinking
Americans everywhere are doing
all they can to prevent further decimation
of rare and unusual wildlife
all all kinds
Nor is this problem limited to this
continent All over the world Individuals
and organizations concerned
with the conservation of natural
resources have ranged themselves
against the thoughtless and greedy
who arc willing to eradicate any
species completely for a shortrange
profit
Foremost in this vast struggle is
the International Union for the Protection
of Nature with headquarters
In Brussels Belgium and American
office in Washington D C The
IUPN is a worldwide organization
made up of 8 government members

continue to expand at the expense of
the natural environment without suffering
irreparable damage
A most dramatic presentation of
these problems has been made recently
in this country by Lee Talbot
a young ecologist for the IUPNs
Survival Service His invaluable
studies of rare and vanishing species
of mammals took him deep into the
countries of the Middle East and
Asia including Nepal Pakistan
Java Lebanon and many others
Traveling by jeep elephant horse
and often on foot ho penetrated
areas where white men had not seen
In years He learned at first hand
the problems not only of such fascinating
animals as the Asiatic lion
and the Great Indian rhinoceros but
the serious damage caused by overgrazing
and overcultivation of land
the senseless slaughter of many animals
through superstition or greed

and the general lack of basic conservation
concepts that arc accepted
and practiced widely In this
country
The 25yearold Californian spent
six months in the East Trained In
wildlife conservation and ecology
the study of the relationship of all
organisms including man to their
surroundings he visited areas
where fertile grasslands have been
reduced to bare bedrock in only
five years through appalling agtlcul
tural practices that have been followed
without change for hundreds
of years Fantastic concentrations of
cattle water buffalo sheep and
goats have reduced certain forest
areas by onehalf in only 50 years
and seem destined to reduce the remaining
fertile lands to barren desert
unless drastic measures arc taken
soon

dense it took hours to travel a aw
hundred yards literally hacking each
step through tangled vines nnd undergrowth
while searching for the
rare Sumatran rhino He stood in
absolute stillness while two angry
rhinos sounding like huge tanks
charged back and forth through the
underbrush so near they spattered
him with mud but he never saw
them because of the dense growth
Fortunately they didnt see him
cither
Many of the governments of the
countries he visited were less than
ten years old having been created
following the independence of India
and nearby nations They have no
wildlife technicians such as those
trained in American colleges and
often these governments are at a
loss to know where to begin meeting
these serious problems of vanishing
tillable soil and disappearing
wildlife They know vc have gone
through the same growing pains and
that this country is still suffering
from the destructive practices of the
early settlors who had no interest
In or knowledge of good land use
techniques
It is the IUPNs aim in part to
assist these and other nations to pro
fit from the lessons we learned
from our mistakes to offer them the
benefit of scientific research already
made relating to the protection of
nature and the conservation of natural
resaurces and to aid in any
possible manner the training of their
own specialists and scientists in
this allimportant field
Twentytwo American conserva
tion organizations including the National
Parks Association are charter
members of the IUPN Although
the United States government has
not yet become nn official member
of this international group many
of its agencies are cooperating in
the excellent work the IUPN is doing
However many forms of Amer
ican wildlife is still endangered and
wc arc sti I using our resources
wasteful In too many ways without
replenishing lliem It would seem
that additional conservation education
is urgently needed in our own
country as well as elsewhere in the
world
