TIGHTNESS OF MONEY MARKET
CURBS SPECULATION.
Volume of Grain Moving to 'Markets
Breaks All Records for This Early
in Season—Increased Hail-
way Earnings.
NEW YORK, Sept, 29. — Stock specu-
lation last week strained successfully at
the leash of restricted money supplies.
Prices advanced into new high ground,
but were pulled back occasionally by the
tightening of the money strain.
Not only were actual available money
resources in the market very scant, but
signs multiplied of the extraordinary vol-
ume of coining requirements. As these
were equally signs of prosperous activity
and bountiful production of new wealth
by the agricultural harvests, speculation
was eager to avail itself of all facilities
offered in tho money market.
The effect of increased borrowings
quickly manifested itself in the rise in
tho call loan rate t-> the highest figure
since the opening of 1910. The marking
up of accounts at the periodical stock
market settlement disclosed largo trans-
fers of stock holdings from New York
to take ttdvantiige of the London money
market.
This process enabled borrowers to re-
duce obligations to New York banks.
Hardening of discounts in London re-
sulted, but last week's Increase in the
bank of England percentage of reserve
argu.* well for the ability of London
to supply further requirements from
New York.
Relief of the New Yo'k money market
wo ild be wo.S<ed as effectually by de-
posit of treasury funds in Interior banks
at the crop moving centers as by de-
posit in Wall Street Itself, the withdraw-
al to the interior constituting the prin-
cipal drain at present on Wall Street
sources.
Treasury plans for such deposits there-
fore entered into Wall Street calcula-
tions. The prodigious movement of grain
to primary markets has broken all rec-
ords for this early in the season. Exist-
ing car shortage therefore must be ex-
pected to be aggravated.
August net earnings of some of the
important railroad systems show rec-
ord figures, although the rush of grain
v. is not yet in effect.
The whole pig iron situation is pro-
nounced stronger.
Increases in dividend-on copper mining
stocks were an Influence on the strength
of those stocks, but warnings were
heard against further increase in rate
of production of copper.
STEEL ill 15 SCI1
Center of Trade Shifts to the Central
West—Large Sales
Made.
NEW YORK, Sept.. 23.-Tlie center of
the steel trade activity last week was
transferred to the Central West, where
large sales of steel-making Iron were
made at sharply advancing prices, at-
tended by some foverishness and excite-
ment.
In the Pittsburg district alone sales of
100,000 tons of basic and 50,000 tons of
Bessemer resulted in an advance of j0
cents to $1 per ton.
Chicago I'lirnat ts also added 10,000 tons
bash- to previous sales made for ship-
ment to St. Louis. The total sales on
tho lakes^aggregate close to 600,oOO tons.
In the Eastern territory outside of
Buffalo, transactions were lighter than
20,000 tons. There was also less activity
in tho Houth, but hi all districts mer-
chants' sales exceeded 300,000 tons. ,
In finished steel products there was
some /decrease in trie volume of n«iw
business and railroad equipment orders
were disappointing, including only 32,000
tons of rails, 1,139 cars, ao locomotives
and less than 50,000 tons of structural
steel.
While new orders were far below those
of the preceding week, specifications on
contracts continued large, shipments
were heavy and mill output was at tho
maximum limit.

very conflicting and it may be that tho
trade will be unable to get together 0:1
.1 common ground of expectation, espe-
cially in regard to the condition figures.
New York traders look for a percentage
of condition from bs> to 70, but probably
no one would be surprised to see figni>-s
over 70 or under 68. Tills conflict of opin-
ion Is due to the great difference in crop
accounts, many localities even sending in
atmospheric J reports that are opposed to one another.
Many traders have come to regard the
crop as being very spotted and therefore
very difficult to Judge.
Again some people go so far as to
claim crop Improvement in some sections
during the last fortnight, probably the
conservative element In tho market look«
for decided deterioration, which la but
natural at this time ot tbe year, and ex«
pects figures under 6S, and It may be that
this view will gain ground during th«
early part of this week. A month ago
the condition of the crop was put at
74.8. What the trade has heard of gin-
ning leads to the belief that figures will
be between 2,750,000 and 3,000,000 bales.
According to reports coming In, ginning
has been very heavy in Ttxas, In exccn.i
of last year, .mt lias not been as heavy
as last year in other sections of tne ben.
A year ago up to September to tr.ere wera
ginned 3,oi(i,o94 bales and two years ago
there were ginned 2,312,074 bales. Some
bears believe ilie ginninga will be well
over 3,uuu,ouo bales, nut Ui<. avera*^ uader
hardly looks tor thai figure to be reached.
After the reports are out of the way,
tho trade will pay moro attention to
weather conditions. The date of the first
killing frosts Is being awaited with great
Interest, as it Is generally figured that
they will have an important bearing on
the total outcome of the crop. Sign* of
tropical storms and frost, warnings will,
of course, have an Irnmediato bullish ef-
fect on prices.
Tbe spot markets continue very quiet
and featureless and give no indication of
developments that will strongly affect the
future markets.
