resulted In the decrease of total of out-
standing interest from ft7l»,f>53.0O to
&7U.50.
When Comptroller Terrell t«»ok offi«c on
January Ltt, 1915, there was due the State
from former administrations extending
through a period of about three years.
|79^Vm.0O a campaign of follow up let-
ters. together with suits by the Attorney
General's Department, has resulted in tlx
collection of $72,1174.10. Of the balance of
»«.HT9.5t> a portion of this amount has btcu
turned over to the Attorney General for
collection and suits for recovery have been
filed in several Instances.
From January 20, 1U14, to November 1,
1014, under the former administration total
collections on Interest from bonds amount-
ed to $iYJ4.W2.45. Since Comptroller Ter
rell took office and in the same period of
time the collections from this source h«ve
amounted to $72«i,$?»5.18, or an increase of
$201,262.73 over the previous year's col-
lections.
Every effort Is being made to collect in-
terest as soon as It becomes due and n
system of letters followed up by refetence
of the matter to the Attorney General for
suit proceedings has resulted in successful
collections in the majority of instances
where accounts were very old.
BANKS ASK LOWER TAXES

of the Austin banks appeared before the
City Commission and requested that the
bunks be allowed n lower assessment.
Tliej" clalmeil that the Austin bonks pay
taxes ou a higher percentage of assessed
valuations than do other taxpayers. Re-
que»t was made that the banks'be given
,9 Mtiessment that will correspond with
tha Mine rate of percentage on which other
taxpayers pay.
The Austin hunks have been paying taxes
on approximately 80 per ceut of the honk
value of their stncK, while the ordinary
taxpayer of the city has been paying on
approximately lift per cent.

Al'STIN, Tex,, Dec. 2.—State Treasurer
J. M. Edward* today completed bis trial
balances as of November SO, showing the
condition of various funds In the State
Treasury at the close of the quarter. The
total cash on hand Is 11,523,738; while dls-
burseiuenU aggregate *2,2.H2,ttM. It was a
busy quarter and a drain on the State's
cash, which explains the early deficiency
lu general revenue.
In the vaults the treasury are held
bonds aggregating 121,117,22!. Of that
amount the permanent school fund owns
$19,708,1198. The remainder is scattered in
ten other accounts, the largest of which Is
>1.1X1,wo, represented In holdings of the
state I Diversity. The Agricultural and
Mechanical College owus bouds totaling

out of the $1,500,000 In cash on hand the
available school fund has $1,157,011 The

today Issued notice of hearing for Decem-
ber 14 to consider revising Hule lt>. Texas
Classification No. 2t covering minimum
charges ou articles loaded on open cars.
The following basis is proposed by the
carriers:

on open cars: ta) Shipments,

Colonel Kdward M. House, advising that
he will surelv be In Austin some time
this winter for his customary visit to

Since his last sojourn here, Colonel
House has sold his residence properly, it
now being occupied by Judge W F. Ram-
sey und family. It Is underitood that
Colonel and Mrs. Rouse will huve apurt
