The Region I-AA play-
off picture may not be total-
ly clarified until Saturday,
but going into Tuesday's
District 5AA finale Lady
Indian Head Coach Sandy
Raymond has a good idea
who the Lady Indians will be
facing in the play-offs.
Entering the 5AA finale,
the #11 Lady Indians (29-7,
7-1) needed a victory over
#7 Holliday (32-4, 9-0) to
o III in to ponder,
ndians dominate
PONDER - Behind a
strong service game the
Lady Indians pounded their
way last the Ponder Lady
Lions Tuesday as they
methodically work their way
to a show down with district
leader Holliday.
Senior Alicia Walker led
the assault from the service
line serving up four of
Nocona's seven aces for the
contest. The only negative to
Nocona's service game was
their aggression resulted in
an atypical 9 service errors.
Nocona won the match in
straight sets, 25-17,25-8, 25-
17.
Offensively Allie
Hackley led Nocona a the
net with a dozen kills.
Haylee Diehl added 9 to go
with a block and 12 assists.
Dayna Young turned in 6
kills; Reagan Barrett 3,
Brittan Mitchell 2 and Patty
Grace Keck 1.
Walker had Nocona's
other block for the evening
while C.J. Hamilton trig-
gered the offense with 17
assists in the contest and one
of the other aces. Diehl and
Young each also recorded
aces against the Lions.
create a regular season tie for
first place and force a
rematch on Saturday to
determine the district title
and play-off seeding.
Henrietta (18-16, 5-4) and
Krum (22-7, 4-5) were in a
similar situation. Krum had
to win Tuesday night to
force a one game play-off for
third. A Bearcat win would
send Henrietta back to the
play-offs again.
The 5AA champion will
receive a bye in the first
round before facing Blanco,
the runner up from District
8AA. A victory there would
send the winner on to face
the winner of the game
between Bangs, the 6AA
runner up, and either Krum
or Henrietta.
The 5AA runner-up will
meet Eastland in the first
round. A victory there would
send them on to face #8
Comfort in the second
round.
District 1AA will send
two ranked teams to the
play-offs #17 Amarillo
Highland Park and #18
Bushland. Bushland won the
tie-breaker Monday night to
advance as the district cham-
pion.

Haylee Diehl (8) and Brittian Mitchell watch as Alicia Walker's (22) attack hits the tape
and falls for a point for the No. 11 Lady Indians who are heading to the playoffs.
For ladies playoff foe will
be Blanco or Eastland
Grape Creek is ranked #16 in
the state while District 2AA
champion Denver City -
which eliminated Nocona in
the regional semi-finals each
of the last two years - is
ranked #21.
The University Inter-
scholastic League has de-
signed the volleyball play-
offs where district champi-
ons receive a bye into the
second round where they
will face the winner between
a district runner-up from a
second district and the third
place team from a third dis-
trict.
Because there is no
District 7AA - due to a lack
of AA schools playing vol-
leyball in West Texas - there
are three additional byes in
the first two rounds.
Bi-district games must be
played either Oct. 31st or
Nov. 1. Area games must be
played between Nov. 3 and 5
and Regional Quarterfinals
played Nov. 7th or 8th.
Winners of those found
games advance to the I-AA
Regional Tournament at
Abilene Christian University
on Nov. 11 with the champi-
onship game set for Noon on
Nov. 12.
KRUM - Like the prover-
bial "little girl witht he little
curl" when the Lady Indians
were "good" Saturday
against the Krum Bobcats,
they were very, very good.
And when they were "bad",
they were very, very bad.
For two sets Saturday the
Lady Indians looked like
they had their game in play-
off form.
And for a set and a half
they looked like a first round
patsy ripe for elimination.
Then the tribe got its act
together and salvaged a
tough, four set, 25-9, 25-18,
18-25, 25-21 win over the
Krum Bobcats in the next to
last District 5AA game of
the season.
The victory allowed the
Lady Indians to compete for
a share of the district title
Tuesday night against
Holliday.
Nocona blistered the
Bobcats in the first set find-
ing holes in the Krum
defense and forcing mistake
after mistake. It took just one
complete service rotation for
Nocona to smash their way
to the 25-9 first set win.
The second set saw Krum
show a bit of life. Meanwhile
the Lady Indians started
making their own mistakes,
but the tribe still dispatched
the hosts in a rotation and a
half and seemed to be cruis-
ing to an easy win over a
team trying to make its way
into the play-offs as the third
place finisher in district.
Bump. set. attack
The third set was a
Bobcat storm capitalizing
om Nocona miscues to force
a fourth set - something no
one other than Holliday has
managed to do in district
play.
Nocona found itself star-
ing down a deep, dark, sea-
son-on-the-brink hole when
the Bobcats roared out to
what appeared to be an
insurmountable 12-1 lead in
the fourth set.
The Lady Indians broke
serve. And after exchanging
service breaks senior Haylee
Diehl stepped to the service
line as Nocona clawed back
from a 14-3 deficit to 14-11.
The Ladies then went
showed the strength to break
Krum's serve each time they
got the ball back. The
Indians strung together three
points on C.J. Hamilton's
serve to tie it at 17-all; five
more points on Kealy
Walker's serve to pull ahead
22-20 and finally, on Dayna
Young's serve Nocona
picked up three points to
close out the match and
breathe a sigh of relief.
Allie Hackley led Nocona
at the net with 12 kills.
Young added 10 and Diehl 9
plus a pair of blocks.
Alicia Walker and Brittan
Mitchell also had blocks for
Nocona while Kealy Walker
had two aces and Diehl 1.
C.J. Hamilton handed out
17 assists and Diehl 15 in the
match.
