Shirley Elder
SAINT JO — Shirley Ann
Elder went to be with her Lord
and Savior on Tuesday, March
04, 2008, at the age of 73.
Shirley grew up in Bossier
City, La., with her sister
Martha. Proud parents were
James Arthur and Mildred
Sexton Phillips. In high school,
she played the saxophone and
twirled baton in the marching
band. She also wrote for the
school paper. She had many
fond childhood memories of
fishing with her family on
Bodcau. She married her hus-
band of 48 years, Dr. Sam Elder,
at First Baptist Church, Bossier
City. She worked several years
at Bossier Bank and Trust
before the couple moved to
Irving.
Shirley and Sam lived in
Irving for 29 years working
together in his orthodontic prac-

were involved in the Irving
Chamber of Commerce, and
Shirley was an avid oil
painter. Shirley also taught chil-
dren's Sunday School at
Plymouth Park Baptist Church
for many years. She treasured
her two children, Sheree and
Sam, Jr., along with her son-in-
law, Mark Dyer, and his par-
ents, John and RuthAnn Dyer.
A devoted Christian, wife,
and mother, Shirley was known
for her creativity, wonderful
cooking, and gentle spirit. She
was a selfless servant who
worked tirelessly at all that she
did. Shirley held fond memo-
ries of her long-time Irving
friends and the roots she'd put
down there.
Shortly before retiring, the
couple fulfilled their dream of
