Tribe goes 4-2 at Lu Allen Tourney-
Ladies nab second runner-up of season
GRAHAM - Where in
the past the Lu Allen

their billing advancing to the
finals.
After dropping one of
their pool games Friday in
the Lu Allen Memorial
Tournament in Graham the
Lady Indians were hoping
for a rematch in the Small
School Gold Bracket final.
Instead they found them-
selves suffering the same
fate Archer City experienced
- losing to Denton Calvary
School, but Nocona's loss
came in the championship
game while Archer City was
dispatched to the consolation
side of the Gold Bracket.
Despite the two losses,
Head Coach Sandy Langford
was pleased with the team's
effort and results.

Pieces coming together
State ranked ladies
looking to repeat
By Tracy R. Mesler
The Lady Indians are not
rebuilding, Coach Sandy
Langford stresses. They are
just finding new pieces for
established roles as they
drive towards a return trip to
the state finals.
When the state finalist
Lady Indians graduated four
senior starters last year,
including a pair of All-
Staters who are now playing
college volleyball, Langford
knew she and the team
would use events like the
Billy Ryan Classic last
weekend and the Lu Allen
Tournament in Graham this
weekend "to find what fits".
The coach has plenty of
girls with playoff experi-
ence, including junior setter
C.J. Hamilton and libero
Kealy Walker, who have
already made two deep runs
into the playoffs.
Juniors Reagan Barrett
and Brittan Mitchell have
advanced from splitting time
at the net last year to taking
starter's duties. The same is
said for junior Jacie Mitchell
who moved up from the jun-
ior varsity to the varsity this
year. "They're playing
well," she said of the trio of
front line players. "They are
learning that you don't have
to smash it to get the kill, just
play smart and put it down
on the floor."
Hamilton and Walker
have seen their playing time
double as they moved from
rotating on and off the floor
replacing each other in the
rotation last year to full time
duties this year.
Meanwhile senior Allie
Hackley is being asked to be
the team's designed hammer
— to stem the tide, get the
kill and keep a level of calm-
ness in the midst of the
storm.
Other than the times the
libero has to rotate off for a
serve before coming back
on, those three never leave
the floor.
"With Allie and Kealy on
the back row for three rota-
tions each, we need to be set-
ting more back row attacks.
They are strong enough to
get the kill from the back,"
the coach said of the pair.
Hamilton is having to
remember that for the first
ime in two years, half the
time she is on the front row,
and now she can jump and
attack the ball - something
she could not do last year.
"But she's starting to show
that (offense)," the coach
said.
"Right now I need some-
one to be the vocal leader,"
Coach Langford said
between matches Friday in
Denton. "Allie, Kealy, C.J.,
one of them needs to take
charge, but they're each
quiet, say little and concen-
trate on taking care of their
duties."
