Eldreds clean
up city park
"Johnny and Marjorie
Eldred, on their own time, with
their own tools came into our
city park and cleared thorn
bushes from around trees and
the kids play area where the old
wading pool used to be in the
southwest corner of the park
near the golf sheds," reported
Patrolman Scott Parker.
"They also cleared a limb off
of a thorn tree that was protrud-
ing over the walk path
"Johnny and Margie then
piled this brush in a pile outside
the park fence so that it would
be easier for city hands or who-
ever to pick it up, and also to
keep some small child from get-
ting into it, as there were many
thorns.
"I think some kind of recog-
nition or at least acknowledge-
ment in our local paper would be
the least we could do for these
kind folks," the officer added

Johnny and Marjorie Eldred took it upon themselves to clear some of the brush and thorns which
was beginning to creep into the Enid Justin City Park.
Sound Off, Readers!
Worth Mention
Hi Tracy,
We are looking forward to
Nocona's homecoming soon,
and I think the "Movie" theme
is a good as any to follow this
year.
However, I was somewhat
taken aback to learn that the
Cona Theatre (long operated by
Mr. and Mrs. Clint on Bailey)
was the first movie on Clay
Street. In fact, it was the very
last location of a movie on Clay
Street. I really don't know the
precise location of the first the-
atre but according to my moth-
er (Clara Crain Stone) there
was a movie house on Clay
Street well before her years in
Nocona High (1917-20). It was
set up in a store-front building
which had dark paint and
drapes over the windows . . .
just a projector, screen, portable
chairs and a piano for music
(taking pictures didn't arrive
until the late 1920s). Gladys
Smith Foster (Mrs. Jack) was
one of several women who pro-
vided the piano music in those
early times, my mother said.
The first "fancy" movie
house was the Millstone which
was part of the Nocona Hotel
complex opened by Fillmore
Ball about 1920. If you look
embedded in the sidewalk (or,
for years this was the case) on
the Clay Street side of the old
hotel you can see a real
Millstone which Mr. Ball found
and which inspired the name of
the theatre. Later, the hotel
was remodeled and that space
was used for offices, a barber
shop and other purposes.
Down Clay Street just south
of Flynt's Dry Goods Store
(later Eddie Stone's Mens
Shop) was (by about the mid-
19208 another theatre...I think it
was called The Nocona...which
had first run movies. It burned
in 1939 and was replaced by
The Ritz Theatre, which
opened on New Year's Eve,
1940. Dallas capital built The
Ritz. It represented the finest
movie Nocona would ever
have. By the time it closed (in
the 1970s???) I was too far
from the local scene to be pre-
cise on that date. Perhaps oth-
ers could provide it.
By the late 1940s, the
Baileys, who operated the
Cona, also build a "new" drive-
in theatre on Highway 82 next
to the then new Nocona Boot
Company building. This
would have been about 1947;
the Baileys built a yellow brick
residence next to the drive-in
movie.
Well, I may have given
more about Nocona movie his-
tory than anyone wants to know
but I felt I needed to put a
"splint" on the historical com-
pound fracture which tried to
make Nocona's last Clay Street
movie the first.
Looking forward to
Homecoming!
Bill Stone, Class of 1948
As I enter Nocona
The bump of the brick streets
greet me
I see it but a small oasis
In the Texas inferno
My home away from home
It seems unnoticed
Untouched by city life
A smile and a tip of the hat
Everyone gives a friendly
greeting
Calling you by name
Along every lonely street
The crisp lawns
The wild bluebonnets waving
in the breeze
Untamed forms
Nature's beauty
Just outside the town
I pass lush pastures
Men on white stallions
I ponder
The wonder
The freshness

Infrequent Moments of Enlightment
By Katie Leschnitzer
OK! I confess. I have sever-
al addictions. No, not the hard
core stuff of alcohol , drugs or
smokes.
My addictions range from
spreading laughter, finding hap-
piness, singing, giving little
gifts to people without a reason
- things like that.
Do you wave to oncoming
traffic? You should. You may
need someone to jump a dead
battery some day!
Do you sing? It's good for
your vocal chords and raises
your spirit!
Do you smile and say "Hi!"?
Have you read a good book
lately? Is your faith in God
strong or do you only call on
him in times of crisis? Do you
respect others' faith or do you
expect them to go to your
church?
Do you look at the body lan-
guage when the presidential
candidates speak? Do they look
up to the left? Do their eyes
blink frequently? Do they make
cheap shots at the other candi-
dates?
Do you have a pet which
you absolutely cherish who
loves you unconditionally?
Do you have a friend that
you can tell your deepest, dark-
est feelings to and that friend
will listen and not judge you?
Do you keep a journal of
daily thoughts and happenings?
Do you set examples for
your children and grandchil-
dren?
Yup - you're addicted!
Do I love my readers - you
decide!
Would you like to change
the name of my column to
