Gift Guide: 2006
Great Gifts To Give and To Get.
By: Christie Bohm Chase, Staff Writer
The season is here and the search is on!
Once again it is time to frantically start
shopping for the perfect gifts for family, friends,
neighbors, coworkers and loved ones. The
tradition of exchanging gifts during the holiday
season not only comes from the gifts given to
the Christ Child by the three wise men, but has
its roots in many worldwide winter solstice
festivals. Long ago in Scandinavia it was
believed the god Odin visited earth to reward
good and punish evil; however, as Christianity
spread Odin was replaced by St. Nicholas who
still magically brings gifts to children today.
Following are a few gift suggestions sure to
please those on your list, but remember as you
get caught in the shopping frenzy, the best gifts
you can give are non material your time,
laughter and love.
Probably the most important step in gift-
buying is remembering everyone you need to
buy for. No matter how good your memory,
always make a list to insure that you do not
accidentally forget someone special. When
purchasing for many at one time it is easy to
forget about someone, even if they are very
close to you. In addition to family and friends
remember to include teachers, coworkers,
neighbors and secret Santa's on your list.
Make gift buying easier on yourself by finding
out what each person wants, needs or likes.
Children often make lists, however adults
usually need a little more coaxing to find out
what they want. Don't hesitate to ask the
person, or someone who knows what they
want. For those who can't name anything that
they particularly need or want, you'll have to be
creative. Think of the recipient's hobbies and
favorite activities and search for items that
would be suitable. Once you determine what to
get each person on your list, buy the gift as
soon as possible to make your holiday a little
less hectic.
There are many tried-and-true gifts that are
popular choices holiday after holiday. Some of
these include, puppies, kittens, sports
equipment, travel bags, compact discs,
clothing, perfume, cologne, collector dolls, gift
baskets, flowers, and gift certificates. If you opt
to give a child or teenager money, stop by the
bank and get crisp new bills. Then find a fun,
reusable container to put the money in. For
instance, a cute piggy bank works well. A
special teacher on your list may enjoy candles,
cookies, plants, pins, aprons, and classroom
supplies; while a coworker might cherish a new
pen set, a picture frame, a desk calendar, a
mini-coffee maker, or an insulated mug.
If you're headed to a holiday party in which
you want to bring the hostess a gift, opt for a
bottle of your favorite beverage, a chocolate
engraved card, a bottle opener, holiday
candles, cookie cutters or a Christmas
ornament, if your gift list of neighbors is long,
hunt thorough your favorite recipes to find one
that can be baked and decoratively packaged
and given as a yummy token of friendship. And
last, but certainly not least, remember your
furry friend this holiday with a colorful fleece
squeaky toy, some catnip, or an eye-catching
bone. Read-on for gift suggestions for the
entire family.

Gift Baskets For The Bunch
A thoughtful themed gift basket filled with the
recipients favorite things will be remembered
for always. From grandparents to
kindergartners, everyone has a hobby or
interest that can be incorporated into a gift
basket. Here are a few simple gift basket ideas
to get your creative juices flowing.
For The Handyman
In a basket or tin, stash a few of the most
used and most misplaced tools like
screwdrivers, paint brushes, measuring
tape and a jar full of screws and nails.
Consider including a gift certificate to a
local building or home supply store.
For The Book Lover
Using a magazine rack as the holder,
combine a few books, a coffee mug, a
headrest pillow and a cotton lap throw to
snuggle up with while reading.
For The Budding Artist
No matter how old or young, any artist
would love a pail filled with art supplies.
For a child's gift, consider safety
scissors, construction paper, crayons,
modeling clay, and a glue stick.
For the Movie Buff
Purchase a large popcorn bowl and fill it
with microwaveable popcorn packs,
theater sized boxes of candy, and video
rental or movie theater certificates.
Gift Wrapping Tips
Instead of traditional gift wrap, try
wrapping your gifts in plain white or
brown craft paper, then painting,
drawing or stenciling on your own
holiday designs.
If you find yourself out of gift wrap
mid-way through wrapping, get
creative and use newspapers and
comic pages, foil wrap, old maps and
calendars, magazine advertisements,
or even fabric or paper remnants such
as wallpaper and bed sheets.
To make personal gift tags, cut out
favorite designs or images from old
holiday cards or postcards and attach
to gifts.
In lieu of a traditional bow, tie your
gifts with raffia, yarn, strips of fabric
or wired ribbon.
If you plan to ship holiday gifts to
relatives far away, ensure they arrive
in mint condition by using make
sturdy boxes and plenty of heavy duty
packing tape. Also, if the items are
fragile, clearly mark this on the
outside of the package so that it will be
hand stamped by the postal system.
