Medlin said he had sowed the
wheat in early August, and then will
sow his cotton in the wheat residue
when the wheat is harvested.
At the third stop, the Eddie
Foshee farm, the cotton and wheal
rotation was demonstrated through
conservation tillage, although
Foshee admitted that "it didn't work
too well."
The purpose was to protect the
young cotton and get it established
earlier through conservation tillage.
However, the lack of moisture on
the dryland acreage caused the
cotton to get too hot. Foshee said
that next week, he would probably
begin the process of getting the
cotton ready for harvesting.
Following a refreshment break,
the final stop was made at the
Wesley Butchee farm just east of
Seagraves, where a Low energy
precision application, or LEPA,
system was demonstrated.
This type of system has bccome
very popular in this part of the
country, since evaporation loss has
been shown to • have "been cut
dramatically. •' • '
Reports have shown that there is
normally a 50 per cent evaporation
loss on a windy day,- while the
LEPA system has shown 95 per
cent efficiency. Also, figures have
shown that far fewer trips in a circle
will be needed, plus yield on cotton
has shown as much as a 100-pound
per acre increase.
While initial costs are expensive,
$3,500-54,000 for a quarter-mile
system, most persons involved with
the system feel it could pay for itself
within the first year of operation
with the savings.
Butchee told those on the tour
that he is very satisfied with his
system and it has worked very well
to this point.
Following the tour, the group
returned to Seminole to enjoy the
noon banquet at the Gaines County
Civic Building.
