Yoga & Pilates
Information and ways each benefits your body.
By: Christie Bohm Chase, Staff Writer
Yoga and Pilates studios seem to be
popping up on every corner. Both forms of
exercise offer more than just a workout, they
offer a way to better living with a better body.
Pilates and Yoga are a lifestyle choice for
those who practice, and most participants
find commitment to either easy to fit into
everyday life. Whether you are looking to
establish a dedicated exercise regimen, or
just try some stress-relieving stretching,
you'll find Yoga and Pilates have lots to offer,
and are great for people of all ages and
body shapes.
Both Pilates and Yoga are age old
practices that are growing in popularity due
to their many benefits. Both practices help
improve balance, enhance energy and
concentration, all while toning and shaping
your body. So, if you are tired of running on
the treadmill, or riding the stationary bike at
the gym, find a Yoga or Pilates studio in your
area and enjoy the benefits of a well-
rounded workout for your mind, spirit and
body.
Yoga
Yoga, which originated in India many
centuries ago, is the oldest system of
personal fitness in the world encompassing
the entire body, mind and spirit. The first
practices of Yoga date back more than 5,000
years, when people began desiring greater
self-understanding, longer life and better
health. Ancient Yogis developed a system of
physical and mental exercises which has
passed the test of time and is still growing in
popularity world wide. The word Yoga
means "to join or yoke together," and its goal
is to bring the mind and body together
through a series of movements.
No matter what your fitness level or
degree of flexibility, or how coordinated you
may be, Yoga can benefit everyone. Yoga
features three main structures, exercise,
breathing and meditation. Through these
structures Yoga brings unity to mind, body
and spirit. The exercises of Yoga are
designed to put pressure on the body's
glandular system, increasing its efficiency
and overall health. The breathing techniques
of Yoga teach students to gently increase
their breath control, which helps improve the
health and function of both body and mind.
Breathing and exercise lead to meditation,
which sharpens the mind and allows
students to become stress-free and
ultimately lead more focused, less stressful
daily lives.
Yoga's exercise is a series of postures
called asanas. The breathing techniques are
referred to as pranayama. Through the
asanas and pranayama Yoga works all of
the muscle groups, stimulates the internal
systems, and improves strength, flexibility,
and balance, all the while calming the mind,
reducing stress, and enhancing inner and
outer poise. Yoga is a full-body workout,
both inside and out!
When first beginning a Yoga practice, it's
best to practice three to five days a week for
fifteen to thirty minutes each time. It's a
good idea to be consistent with the time of
day that you practice, as this will help create
a routine for you. When practicing, wear
something comfortable, nothing too tight or
too loose, and go in bare feet. This will allow
your feet to grip the floor and will help keep
you from slipping.
Essentially, you can practice yoga
anywhere. Many people opt to practice in the
privacy of their home, maybe with the aide of
a Yoga video or DVD. Others like a class
setting and opt to find a Yoga studio that fits
their needs. Following are a few tips to help
get you started.
• Make sure you practice on an empty
stomach. A full stomach can be
uncomfortable, and may make you
feel sick.
• Yoga should not be painful. If
something hurts, stop doing it, and
consult a Yoga instructor to make
sure that you are doing the posture
correctly.
• During postures always breath
through your nose. Inhale when
limbs extend outward or upward, and
exhale when the body folds in and
when the body is twisting.
• If you are a beginning Yogi, hold
each posture for three to five full
breaths (one full breath equaling an
inhalation and an exhalation). As you
progress gradually start holding the
poses longer.
• At the end of your practice, be sure
to give yourself at least five minutes
to lie in complete stillness. This will
give your body a chance to relax and
soak in the benefits of the Yoga.
P Hates
Much like Yoga, Pilates focuses on body
alignment and correct breathing. Pilates
aims to improve both body strength and
flexibility by targeting certain body areas.
Unlike Yoga, Pilates does not incorporate
meditation, or use breathing to connect to
your inner self. Pilates students gain a
greater understanding of body alignment
during movement.
Pilates exercise was developed in the
1920's by Joseph Pilates. Joseph saw the
modern world becoming one where people
sat all day behind work stations engaging in
repetitive tasks, and he became concerned
at the effect this would have on people's
health. To combat bad posture and poor
health, Joseph came up with a series of
physical exercises designed to help correct
muscular imbalances and improve posture,
coordination, balance, strength and flexibility,
as well as to increase breathing capacity and
organ function.
Joseph Pilates studied Yoga, Zen and
ancient Greek and Roman exercise
regimens to develop his own fitness regime.
He felt that he was able to incorporate and
improve upon many of the best parts of each
of the disciplines he studied. During his
lifetime Joseph used his Pilates system to
help rehabilitate injured men and women
from WW1. Everyone benefited from his
workout, and he began changing the way
people thought of exercise. He opened
Pilates studios and his popularity grew and
grew. Many people truly feel Pilates offers
the best of every type of exercise and that is
why it is still so widely popular today.
