Sheriff
ll/9-Four Andrews men
sustained what were believed to
minor injuries as the result of an
accident at 9:50 a.m. (See
separate story, this issue).
Police
ll/10--At 9:45 a.m., police
were called to the 600 block of
Southwest 6th Street, where a
complainant told officers that a
person or persons unknown had
entered his yard and taken a half-
ton chain hoist hanging in the
north side of the yard.
Value was placed at $100.
ll/ll--Police were called to
the 600 block of Southwest 3rd
Street at 3:00 p.m., where a
complainant told them a person
or persons unknown had removed
the rear license plate from his
vehicle, which was parked at his
residence.
Value on the plate was $47.74.
11/11--A t 4:10 p.m., a
complainant at Peppertree Park
called police and said that a
person or persons unknown had
taken his Toyota pickup, valued
at $8,000, from his residence.
In addition, another
complainant told officers that a
purse, containing $80 in cash and
papers in a wallet, a VCR and a
trampoline, were also in the
pickup. Value was placed at
$498.
Accidents
11/9--A two-vehicle accident
at the intersection of Southwest
Avenue C and Southwest 4th
Street at a Four-Way stop caused
minor damage and no injuries at
8:30 a.m.
According to investigating
officers of the Seminole Police
Department, a 1988 Dodge
Dayton, driven by Lee Nell
Whorton, 30, of P.O. Box 314,
was stopped at a stop sign facing
north and turning west, and a
1979 Ford pickup, driven by
Derene Sutton, 26, of 400 SW
Ave. L, was stopped at a sign
facing cast.
Sutton said she had looked to
the south, saw the street closed,
and did not see the Whorton
vehicle, which had already pulled
into the intersection, and the
collision occurred.
Sutton was cited by officers
for failure to yield right of way at
a stop sign.
11/9-At 5:37 p.m., a two-
vehicle accident on U.S. 62-180
in the Seminole City Limits,
caused minor damage and no
injuries.
According to Seminole Police
Department investigators, a 1979
Chevrolet Malibu, driven by John
Thiessen, 30, of 310 NE Ave. I,
was east bound on 180 and
attempting a left turn onto a
private parking area and a 1978
Ford van, driven by Rebecca
Sollars, 31, of P.O. Box 856, was
attempting a left turn coming out
of the parking area and
apparently failed to see the
Malibu.
Sollars was cited by officers
for failure to maintain financial
responsibility.

transported one from the 100
block of SW Avenue L to
Seminole Memorial Hospital,
sick call.
At 7:30 p.m. EMS made an
emergency transfer from SMH to
Lea Regional Hospital (LRH) in
Hobbs, NM.
ll/10--At 8:45 a.m. EMS was
called to the scene of a motor
vehicle accident at SE Avenue F
and S.E. 8th Street with no
transport made.
11/11—At 5:09 p.m. EMS was
called to the race track east of
Seminole and made an
emergency transport of accident
victim to SMH.
At 7:40 p.m. eMS transported
one from SMH to LRH.
11/12-At 12 noon EMS was
called to LRH to transport one
back to the 600 block of SW 15th
St.

October summary reports
At 4:30 p.m. EMS was called
to SMH to transfer patient to St.
Mary's of theiMains in Lubbock.
Cancer Society's
Smokeout Nov. 15
The board of the Gaines Unit
of the American Cancer Society
made final plans for observance
of "The Great American
Smokeout" Thursday.
Locally, non-smokers are
urged to "adopt" smokers for the
day and encourage them to stop
smoking. An "adoption" form can
be found elsewhere in this issue
of The Sentinel.
In other business at the
meeting, a report was given on
the "By Invitation Only" fund-
raiser that will take place Dec. 1.
Invitations will be sent to several
persons in the Seminole area.
Robert Cottrell gave a report
on a meeting he attended in
Austin concerning golf
tournaments to benefit the cancer
socicty.
More specific ideas on putting
on a tournament will be
forthcoming before the second
annual county tournament, which
is tentatively set the final
Saturday in April.
COUNTY
COUNTY COURT
Ten new causes were filed in
the Criminal Section of Gaines
County Court during October
involving four D.W.I, or D.U.I.D.
cases, two thefts or worthless
checks, one assault case, and
three other criminal causes. Six
traffic cases were appealed from
lower courts.
Causes pending at the end of
the month totalled 258 including
106 DWI or DUID, 24 theft or
worthless checks, 22 assault
cases, 49^traffic, and 57 other
criminjtLbauscs.
Total dispositions included
four D.W.I, or D.U.I.D., four
theft or worthless checks, two
assault cases, 5 traffic cases, and
six other criminal causes, for a
total of 21 dispositions. Age of
the 21 causes disposed of was 12
less than 30 days old and 9 over
90 days. Eight were dismissed,
12 were placed on deferred
adjudications, and one entered a
plea of guilty or nolo contendere,
no jury. ,
Civil cases remained the same
with 43 cases still on the docket
including one suit for injury or
damage other than motor vehicle,
and 42 suits on debt.

SCHOOL:

Texas Education Agency.
The Board recessed at 10:35
p.m. to enter an executive
session. Afterward, it was
announced that the following new
personnel had been hired:
Reyes Borjas, part-time
cafeteria worker at F. J. Young;
Vicky Berry, part-time cafeteria
worker at High School; Gene
King, business manager; Mary
Nell King, counselor, and Debbie
Rinker as custodian at Primary
and Elementary.
Resignations received were
Doris Harmonson, crossing
guard; Glendon Jones,
maintenance worker; Blanche
McWhorta, custodian; and John
Shepherd, as school attorney. *
All members of the Board
were present, plus numerous staff
members and spectators.
COUNTY:

authorized for payment and the
County Auditor's monthly report
was also approved.
The Court recessed for a brief
executive session, concerning
personnel matters, but Judge
Townsend reported that no action
was required.
Precinct #2 Commissioner-
elect Joe Rowlett, set in on the
meeting. All other Court officials
were present.
The Court will meet again next
Monday to hear a representative
of the Texas Association of
Counties, concerning insurance.

Five births were recorded in
Gaines County and two deaths
during October.
CITY
POLICE DEPT.
During the month of October
the Seminole Police Department
served the community with a
total of 1648 regular hours and
184.45 overtime hours. They
patrolled 7,067 miles. Twenty-
two hours were spent in court
appearances, and 10 hours on
traffic control at games, funerals,
etc.
One burglary of a business/
building was reported, but no
financial loss resulted. Two
burglr les of vehicles resulted in
a loss of $250. Neither were
cleared and nothing was
recovered. Eleven thefts of
property resulted in a loss of
$40,705.82. Three were cleared
and $39,213.39 was recovered.
Theft of one vehicle resulted in a
loss of $3,600 which was
recovered.
There were three assaults, and
two were cleared. There were 27
miscellaneous offenses with 17
cleared.
In summary, a total of 45
offenses were reported for
October, and 23 were cleared.
Total losses for October were
$44,555.82 and $42,813.39 was
recovered.
Of the 22 reports remaining on
the records 8 are inactive, 6 are
under investigation, and 5 are
pending.
EMS
In October Seminole EMS
made a total of 58 runs with 32
runs made in the city, 9 in
County, and 17 runs out of
County. This included 20
emergency runs, 9 - emergency
transfers, 9 routine transfers, and
20 no transports.
Fifteen runs utilized the
advanced life support system and
15 runs used the monitor/
defibrillator.
EMS traveled a total of 2472
miles during October. They billed
Out $10,125.75 and collected
$5,709.48 from past months
billings.
MUNICIPAL COURT
Municipal Court reported 79
traffic tickets were issued in
October, including 21 for
speeding, 7 slop sign violations, 5
red light violations, 5 no driver's
license, 4 expired or no motor
vehicle insurance, 1 expired or no
tags, 2 driver's license
restrictions, 1 no m/c
endorsement, 2 illegal turns, 2
excessive accelerations, 20 no
liability insurance, 6 FTA, and 3
parking tickets. One ticket was
issued for operating a motor
vehicle while intoxicated, two
others for intoxication, and six
involving minor consumption/
possession.
Fourteen teen court cases were
dismissed and 8 others reported,
six warrants were issued, and
four warrants were satisfied.
Total revenue generated for
the city totalled $2,23.00 and for
the slate $807.50.
ANIMAL CONTROL
During the month of October
the Animal Control unit received
23 complaints, and picked up 44
dogs and 35 other animals for a
total of 79 animals. Seven
animals were returned to their
owners, no animals were adopted
out, and 72 animals were
destroyed.
UTILITY DEPT.
In October, the City billed
2309 customers for 27,998,000
gallons of water for a total dollar
amount of $40,26 1.98,
$16,433.56 for sewer, and
$20,829.63 for trash hauling.
Water production totaled
33,356,000 gallons with 257
pounds of chlorine used.
Collections received for last
month included $64,828.90
water; $16,694.75 sewer;
$22,625.71 trash haul; $329.45
other; water and sewer tap fees,
$430.00; and $2,050 utility
deposits.
There were 498 past due
notices, 23 cut-offs for non-
payment, 6 were rechccked, 5
meters were pulled for non-
payment, 73 meters were re-read,
61 were read and turned off, 64
were read and turned on, 11 were
transferred, and 1 meter was set
for new service, 12 meters were
changed out. Five customers
reserved the flatbed.
During October metered but
unbilled customers consumed
208,000, county jail; 220,000 M.
S. Doss Memorial Park; 66,000
Pioneer Park; 52,000 M. S. Doss
Youth Center; 42,000 retirees (7)
(including trash and sewer), for a
grand total of 588,000.
They installed 180 ft, 6 inches
of new lines, repaired 418 sq. ft.
of street repairs, repaired 3 1/2 ft.
city mains and one leak, replaced
one fire hydrant.
STREET DEPT.
In October the Street
Department patched 20 potholes,
bladed 11 blocks and 53 blocks
of alley, installed 5 new signs,
and repaired 15 signs.
PARKS DEPT.
During the month of October
the Parks Department spent 78
hours mowing, 28 hours
trimming, 40 hours picking up
trash, and 20 hours in
maintenance.
LANDFILL/REFUSE
During October the Landfill,
Sanitation & Refuse Department
traveled 1708 miles, emptied
11,033 containers for estimated
589 tpns. The Sanitation Dept.
emptied 149 flatbed loads,
mowed 70 blocks of right-of-
way, and traveled 167 sweeper
miles. The Landfill Dept. spent
90 hours excavating, 92 hours
covering, and 5 hours picking up
trash.
FIRES
During September the
Volunteer Firemen answered 10
calls which included four calls
for trash burning in the west
draw, at Comanche Trails, three
miles SE, and 8 miles east; one
car on NE Avenue B; wash diesel
away at Friends Station; landfill
fire; mobile home at 401 NW
Avenue H, motor vehicle
accident (MVA) 15 miles west,
and they also helped in the search
for runaways.
