Tub Fair of the Agricultural,
Stockraisiug, and Industrial Asso-
ciation ot Western Texas for 1874,
is over. It turned much better than
was expected. Having no railroad
connection with the rest of the
State or country, its success was
amazing. This shows what our
people cau do when they have rail-
road facilities.
By the time of the next Fair, one
year hence, we shall have railroad
connection with the rest of tlite Un-
ion. Let tlie Association re-orga-
nize, and go to work, now, aud pre-
pare to beat every other fair in
Texas in the fall of 1875. Let mo-
ney bo raised, large premiums ofter
ed, and the papers of the Union
filled with correspondence on the
subject; and people from all parts
of Natiou will come to Sau Antonio
next fall. Everybody wants to see

The Election, and the canvass
that preceded it, such as it was, are
now over, aud we are glad of it,
both on our own account, and on
that of our readers and fellow-citi-
zens. We are now prepared to
drop campaign political writing,
aud devote ourselves to the work
of making the Express a first rate
newspaper, a good family paper,
and a vigorous organ and agency
in the promotion of the intellectual,
moral, social, and material develop-
inenttof the country. And our rea-
ders and fellow-citizens can now,
without the distraction of a canvass
and an election, devote themselves
to the welfare of their families,
the prosecution of their business
and industries, and to the mental
and moral improvement of them-
selves, their families, and their
fellow-men. "Life is short and art
is long,** and time, talents, and op-
portunities wasted are much more
serious considerations than the elec-
tion pr defeat of this or that man
for oflice. These latter things are
of but temporary interest and im-
portance, while the real duties and
interests of human life and society
involve the happiness of both our-
selves and all with whom we are
related and associated.
THE LAST DAYS OF GUIZOT
Guizot remained a silent and
quiet witness of the momentous
events which tool; place under the
Second Empire. He foresaw that
the war system, which was a neces-
sity for the new government, could
not always bring fresh victories to
France He was almost astonished
to find that bis unpopularity had
changed into popularity; the stu-
deutsot the Latin quarter bowed to
him when they saw the venerable
old man walking toward the insti-
tute; young children auked their
mothers who was this M. Guizot
who wrote the history ot France for
his grandchildren, and were anxious
to see this remarkable professor,
who had onoe lectured to assembles,
kings and miuisters. There is so
much egotism iu the world that
everybody in the end was forced to
love a man who was no loncer work
ingfor himself. His ambition, once
so promt, was like a tree which has
been uprooted, and can no longer
bear fruits. His affections had been
sadly wounded. He had lived long
enoughto sec France bereft of one
tine province, her glory humbled,
the capitulation of Paris, the hor-
rors of the commune. He bad a
right to ask those who had made
the revolution of 1848, "What have
you brought France!" He said noth-
ing. He felt eveu deeper wounds
He lost a beloved daughter a tew
months ago, one who had been his
constant companion, his secretary,
his assistant. Still he remained
strong, and the last time I saw
him, there was as much fire in his
eyes as the days when lie faced his
enemies aud poured fourth his elo-
quent sarcasms. "An Emperor
must die erect.'' Guizot died like
that Roman Ktuperor, and be fell
like a verdant tree struck by an ax.

VINEGAR BITTERS
\
Grateful Thousands proclaim
Vinegais Bitters the most wonder-
ful Invigorant that over sustained
the sinking system.
No Person cau tako these Bit-
ters according to directions, and re-
main long unwell, provided their
bones are not destroyed by mineral
poison or other means, and vital or-
gans wasted boyond repair.
Bilious, Remittent, and In-
termittent Fevers, which are so
urevalont in tho valloys of onr great
rivers throughout tho United States,
especially thoso of tho Mississippi,
Ohio, Missouri, Illinois, Tennessee,
Cumberland, Arkansas, Red, Colo-
rado, Brazos, Rio Grande, Pearl,
Alabama, Mobile, Savannah, Ro-
anoke, James, and many others,
with their vast tributaries, through-
out our entire country during the
Summer and Autumn, and remarka-
bly so during soason3 of unusual
heat and dryness, are invariably ac-
companied by extensive derange-
ments of tho stomach and liver, and
other abdominal viscera. In their
treatment, a purgative, exerting a
powerful influence upon these vari-
ous organs, is essentially necessary.
Thoro is no cathartic for tho purpose
equal to Dis. J. Walker's Vinegar
Bitters, as they will speedily remove
tho dark-colored visoid matter with which
the bowels are loaded, at the somo time
stimulating the secretions of the liver,
and generally restoring tho healthy func-
tions of tho digestive organs.
Fortify the body against dis-
ease by purifying all its fluids with
Vineqab Bitters. No epidemic can
tako hold of a system thus fore-armed.
Dyspepsia or Indigestion, iiead-
acho, Pain in the Shoulders, Coughs,
Tightness of tho Chest, Ditiiness, Sour
Eructations of tho Stomach, Bad Taste
in tho Mouth, Bilious Attacks, Palpita-
tion of tho Heart, Inflammation of the
Lungs, Pain in tho region of tho Kiilneya,
and a hundred other painful symptoms,
are tho offsprings of Dyspepsia. Ono bot-
tle will provo a better guarantee of its
merits than a lengthy advertisement.
Kin
Neck,
Indolent Inflammations, Mercurial affec-
tions, Old Sores, Eruptions of the Skin,
Soro Eyes, etc. In these, as in all other
constitutional Diseases, Walker's Vin-
esa a Bitters have shown their great cur-
ative powers iu tho most obstiuato and
intractable cases.
For Inflammatory and Chronic
Rheumatism, Gout, Bilious, Remit-
tent and Intermittent Fevers, Diseases
of tho Blood, Liver, Kidneys and Bladder,
theso Bitters havo no equal. Such Dis-
eases are caused by vitiated Blood.
Mechanical Diseases.—Persona
engaged in Paints and Minorals, such as
Plumbers, Type-setters, Gold-beaters and
Miners, as they advance in life, aro sub-
ject to paralysis of tho Bowels. To guard
against this, tako a dose of Walkeb's
Vinegar Bitters occasionally.
For Skin Diseases, Eruptions,
Tcttor, Salt-Rheum, Blotches, Spots, Pim-
ples, Pustules, Boils, Carbuncles, Ring-
worms, Scald-head, Sore Eyes, Erysipe-
las, Itch, Scurfs, Discolorations of the
Skin, Humors and Diseases of the Skin of
whatever name or nature, aro literally
dug up and tarried out of the system in a
short timo by tho uso of theso Bitters.
Pin, Tape, and other Worms,
lurking in tho system of so many thou-
sands, are effectually destroyed and re-
moved. No system of medicine, no ver-
mifuges, no anthelmintics will freo the
svstem from worms like these Bitters.
ForFemaleCompIaints, iu young
or old, married or single, at the dawn ot
womanhood, ortho turn of life, theso Ton-
ic Bitters display so decided an influence
that improvement is soon perceptible.
Cleanse the Vitiated Blood
whenever you find its impurities bursting
through the skin in Pimples, Eruptions,
or Sores; cleanse it when you find it ob-
structed and sluggish in the veins; cleanse
it when it ia foul; your feelings will tell
you when. Keep the blood pure, and tho
health ot' tho svstem will follow.
