TnE "Additional Insteuctions"
Circular" "for the guidance of
the Iuuer Circle of the Democratic
party of Texas" appears in the St.
Louis Globe-Democrat in full. It
tells the truth, whoever concocted
and sent it out. We shall find
space lor it in our columns soon.
1 m m
The Statesman says that Col. Johu
W. Glonu, a well known Republi-
can, is^pow a reporter for the State
Oazetlf. Well, what of it! A nmvs
paper man can write where he
pleases, as well as a lawyer can
plead where ho pleases, we should
think.
It is rumored in Dallas that
two private banks in Marshall will
suspend. The drought dries them
up, and the hard money curse, as
it comes with its terrible coutractile
force upon the muscles of Texan
energy,—Austin Statesman.
Is the Statesman also one of the
Democratic inflationist# of Texas?
The Washington Chronicle ot the
14tli instant positively says there
will be no change in the head of
the Interior Department unless
Delano, "lor personal reasons,
should voluntarily choose to resign,
of which he has now no intention,
until the retirement of the present
administration."
John G. Breslin, the last Dem-
ocratic Treasurer ol Ohio, stole
$€>50,000 of the public money, an
amount equal at the present time
to a million. There was no restitu-
tion. Under Republican manage-
ment not one dollar has been lost.
Now come the Breslin party and
ask to be restored to power in that
important office.
Many persons in Texas seem to
think there is a probability of a
little war with Mexico. We do not
believe with them. War will not
arise in consequence of the military
suppression of the robberies and
murders on the Rio Grande. Mexico
could not attord to go to war on
such an issue, where she so inclin-
ed, to say nothiug of her financial
and numerical weakness. #Even
should'the United States seek by
annexation to exu nd the boundary
between the two countries from the
Rio Grande to the Sierra Madre, it
would be accomplished by negotia-
tion and not by war. The territory
would be taken iu compensation for
the ten or fifteen millions worth of
'property taken from our citizens on
the border.
Yet the Austin Statesman says
that Washington letter-writers, and
one from Long Branch, concur in
stating that the President favors
the extension of the Texas bound-
ary line from the Rio Grande river
to the Sierre Madre mountains,
which will annihilate the present
"free belt," the source of so much
difficulty aud bloodshed, and £ive a
boundary line which can be proper
ly defended. To accomplish this
it will be necessary to filibuster to
some extent, and this, it is stated,
tho Texans are about to do, as the
arrest of Cortina does not seem to
stop the marauding BXJJfljitions
from Mexico. Says the CfrfltpVc
correspondent:
"If this proposed Trxiin filibus
tering expedition receives even a
wink of encouragement from the
President then the Texans will go
on.^ And this little fact of proposed
resistance to armed robbers may be
a little 'speck of war.'
"The fact that United States ves
sels and supplies are now on the
way to the Bio Grande looks as
though our government were pre-
paring for some sort of contingency
there."
TnE Chicago 'limes thinks the
Baltimore Gazette in error when it
says that Senator Thurmau "has
degeuerated from a statesman into
a truckling time-server," saying
thp.t "he is just as much a states-
man now as ever, which, is a very
small pattern ot a statesman in
deed." The Times does not seem to
admire prominent Democrats as
much as it did some years ago.
At all events, it does not feel called
upon to praise them simply because
they are Democrats. Like many
other leading journals, the Times
has ceased to be a party organ, and
has adopted the rule ot candor and
common sense in dealing with pub-
lic men and measures.
A new book by the author of
"The Household of Bouverie," is
certain to attract the attention of
novel readers, for there are not
many novels of its class that leave
a pleasauter impression on the mem-
ory than it, and Mrs. AVarfield
has not written enough to take the
freshness from her work. Her new
title is not as happily chosen as the
last, for l,A Double Wedding; or
How She Was Won," is a little sug-
gestive ot a common place sensa-
tionalism; but the story will be
found bright and interesting, clever
iu its.plot, and in its delineation of
character, and quite worthy of its
author's reputation. It has just
been published by T. B. Peterson
& Brothers, and will be a good
book to take away lor the summer
vacation.
Robert Dale Owen An In.
dianapolis journal announces the
arrival of Robert Dale Owen in
that city, accompanied JUy his two
sons. It seems that tho earliest
tokens of insanity were the result
of disease, and among other hallu-
cinations Mr. Owen believed he
was the heir to the earldom of
lireadalbaue and to an immense
estate, and he began to plan how
he would endow colleges and build
orphan asylums. His whole con-
versation was as to "the best means
of benefiting mankind." Unless in-
ripient paralysis should setin there
are hopes Mr. Owen's mental lacul-
ties may be restored. The luisfor
tune that has belalleu this amiable,
accomplished and high-minded gen-
tlemen will be regretted by all cir.

Is llie Herald a Democratic Pa-
per!
Editors Expreu:
Iu Thursday's edition of the S. A.
Herald.the editor of that paper takes
occasion to assure the public of the
Democratic genuineness of tho Her-
ald. He says:
"As faithful to the doctrines and
the traditions aud tho usages of the
democratic party as the needle to
the pole, the San Antonio Herald
knows no variableness nor even the
shadow of turning."
Having been a close observer of
the erratic course of the Herald, and
even a reader of the composite edi-
torials which emanute from its edi-
torial head, I think it is a question
whether the Herald'is any better
guide, as a democratic organ, than
the Express, nor do I intend to
bring tho genuineness ot the poli-
tics of tho Express into question
by this assertion.
The Herald, if we judge it by its
leading editorials, has no settled
political principles. These editorials
are made up mostly of extracts
from Northern papers, and oftew
the same article is taken from dif-
ferent newspapers, aud presents an
ill fitting piece of composite work.
The Herald has abused Gov. Coke,
Hon. Jno. Ireland, and other lead-
ing democrats. It gave a very
luke warm support to the Deuio«
crati'c ticket for city offices at the
last election, aud is now advocat-
ing the so-called Independent ticket
for the Constitutional Convention
in the 30th Dist. in the face of the
fact that there is a regular demo
cratic ticket in the Held, as legiti-
mate in every respect as the demo-
cratic ticket in this District, which
the Herald supports.
The true test of a party paper is
its devotion to all the men and
measures of the party, and a paper
that acts as the Herald has acted
does not deserve to be considered a
party paper. It is nothing more
nor less than a mercenary concern
that shapes its course to suit its
position to its local patronage. X.
pted notion tliat men always look out for
tliemsolves iirut ami their friends after-
wards. I have hoard it statod on as good
authority as theso rumors are generally
based upou, that Pendleton proposes to
make another strong tight for tho Presi-
dential nomination next year. That he
has placed himself upon an inflation plat-
form to tako the support of the South from
Ilondriclts, of Indiana, who, it is hoped,
will bo placed iu such an equivocal posi
tion by reason of liis hard-money associa-
tions, that he can not openly endorse in-
flation, and will Ion* the support of all of
the Southern and Home of tho Western
States. It is also hoped that Thurmiui, by
reason of his opposition to the financial
plank, will so woaken himself in Ohio that
it will leave a solid delegation lor l'endlo-
ton.
Tlmrmun on tho other hand is according
to nnothor rumor acting on a secret uti
ilerstauding with the Eastern Democrats,
who will support liiin iu tho evont of a
choioe after Tildeu. It is understood that
Thurnian is to lend his tacit support to
the non-money idea this fall and thereby
become apparently a friend of tho infla-
tionists ; that the South is to lio divided
between Peudleton and Hendricks, as was
done by tho Eastern bondholders in 1868,
aud it is behoved that when it beoouies
impossible to nominate either of those
men, Thurnian will be accepted by the
South iu preference to cither Tildon or
Ilayard, Dion of Uio must pronounced hard,
money convictions, and that with the as-
sistance of tho Middle and Eastern and
hard-money Western Stato, after Tildcn's
withdrawal, lie can be nominated as the
lioxt best candidate.
It will bo noticed as significant that all
of theso rumors do not touoh William Al-
lcu, who, in the minds ot some people,
stands a better chance than many others
named for being the next President.

IIarris Captured.
Yesterday morning we "published tho
killing of a man named Yancey by one
□arris, who tied and was pursued by
neighbors. A gentloman from Georgetown
yesterday reports that Harris was captur-
ed, and that he is now in the Georgetown
jail. There is a different version of the
circumstances of the killing from what
wo gave Tuesday. It is now said that
Ilarris, who is a youn^, man, killed Yau-
cey's dog about midway between his owu
house and that of Yancoy, when the latter
camo running to the plaeo in a threaten-
ing manner. Harris commenced to walk
backwards with his gun drawn, telling
Yancoy to koep away ; but Yancey press-
ed ahead and finally got hold ol the guu
barrel, and in theacuille that ensued tho
weapon was discharged, and Yancey was
instantly killed, tho wholo load entering
his body.—Statesman.

A groat many people are amusing them-
selves by figuring out the Presidential
probabilities that will grow out of this
contest, and assuming to speak as to the
motives of Pendleton and othsr inllation-
ists, as also those of Senator Tliuriiiau in
their uction before the convention met.
Some have attributed to Ttiiirman the
motive of working iu the iuterust of Til-
den. of New York, and others have credit-
ed Pendleton and his followers with being
iu the interest of Bayard, of Delaware.
These are merely a few ot the rumors
that are current iu political circle*, the
truth of which can not be vouched for.
There aie two which I have heard relatiug
to the secret policy of both Pendleton and

others incapable of poaitiTa proef, seem to
