Ti, le post-Civil War era in Texas has
often bn characterized as a period of Reconstrtion,
with emphasis on Republican
office-holders and the resulting controversy.
One of the things that we rarely
hear about is the aid the Republican government
provided to railroads that resulted
in significant increases in track mileage
throughout the state.1 The trunk lines that
would serve the state throughout the rest
of the century took shape during these
years, and railroads made possible the integration
of rural Texas into the national
market and began the rush toward urbanization.
