GENERAL INFORMATION BULLETIN
Students desiring to take an examination out of schedule
for reasons other than illness may do so with the consent of
the instructor and of the Dean and upon payment of an examination
fee of $2.50 at the Business Office, a receipt for
which must be presented to the instructor at the time of
the examination.
Advanced Standing Examinations.-Applications for advanced
standing examinations must be approved by the
head of the department concerned and by the Dean of the
Faculty. Application blanks may be obtained from the
Registrar. Examinations will be allowed only in very
exceptional cases, and it may be expected that they will
be searching in character, that in length they will extend
to 3 hours for each 3 semester hour course, and that the
papers will be graded with great strictness. The examination
shall be taken prior to completion of a subsequent
course in the same subject in Southwestern.
In order to pass an advanced standing examination, a
grade of at least 80 per cent must be secured.
The special examination fee of $2.50 for each examination
must be paid in advance at the Business Office.
Grades.-The quality of work is expressed by grades
given in terms of percentages. The grades are made up on
the basis of class exercises, laboratory work, term papers,
and final examinations. The grade of 70 is a pass. A
grade below 70 is a failure, except in continuous courses
in which a grade of 65 to 69 inclusive is a condition. A
condition may be removed by making a grade of 75 on the
second half of the course.
Incomplete Courses.-If a course remains incomplete for
a period of 20 days after the opening of the next succeeding
term or semester, the Registrar will record a grade of
50 for the course, unless an extension of time is granted by
the Faculty.
Reports.-At the close of each semester instructors report
to the Registrar the grades made by the students on
their courses. Reports covering the attainments of the students
will be sent to the parents or guardians at the close
of each semester. Self-supporting students over 21 years of
age may receive their reports if they request them in writing.In addition to the semester reports, the Faculty submits
reports on the scholastic standing of the students about the
