FARMERS
By Frank Ham
Ike increased the import tariff on
Watches 50 per cent last summer
which in effect amounted to 300 percent
due to the method
Critics of Ikes tariff increase say
that the tariff should not be increased
and the American watch makers
should receive a direct subsidy of
300 per cent or orders from the
army for things they dont need
which would be an Indirect subsidy
That would be a way that the average
man would never learn of the
subsidy
Ike refused to raise the tariff on
some farm products that are imported
and are in stockpile here
The U S aided our tobacco plants
in building new cigarette plants in
Australia Philippines and in other
countries Under our point four pro
gram we are developing the pro
duction of tobacco there This will
eliminate our exports of tobacco
The tariff was lowered on fish
that came into this country That lo
wered the income on American fishermen
and is an indirect slap at the
American farmer who produces any
kind of meat
The tariff on fur imported into
the U S is so low that the little
farmer and trapper cant make expenses
in catching our fur The
little farmer once derived a large
income from furs
Cow hide prices in the U S are
so low that wo imported less than
we exported in 1951 At one time the
price of a cow hide raised the price
of a cow Today it will not pay the
expense of taking the hide from an
animal
Today we import molasses for cow
feed for less than we can produce
coarse grain in America or molasses
in America
A low tariff on vegetable oil and
dairy products has helped to chc
atc the stockpile on those things
Bensons dairy committee has recommended
that all tariffs and supports
to the dairy men be taken off
to force American dairymen to produce
for less
Benson controlled peanut acreage
to a point last year that we did
not produce enough for consumpt

ion He Is now importing peanuts to
prevent the farmer from receiving
a fair price for his peanuts
Benson lowered the support price
on oats barley and maize after most
of the oats and barley were planted
This lowering of the support
of maize gets very close to each of
us on the High Plains
Many good Americans think that
when Mr Benson learns about the
agricultural problems that he will
change his action
Many people think that they can
put pressure on Benson and change
his actions
Some think that his program will
eventually work for the farmer or
if it doesnt work then Benson will
change It
Bankers expect the farmer to pay
his indebtedness regardless of what
Benson docs each fall
Sometimes women marry drunkards
and think that they can straighten
them out
Benson will not change his way of
action Benson just docs not represent
the farmer and never will
The DixonYates hearing was completed
Jan ID That is not just a
120 million dollar subsidy plus a 20
million dollar a year subsidy It is
a policy and opens the road for more
deals like It If it goes over

AHEAD
After 104 Weeks
Seam that the phooorapu r missed the mark in the
above picture since the home is nt shown
This week marks the second anniversary and the end
of this Mystery Farm Series During the past two years
VAUGHN IMPLEMENT CO and BARBOUR BROS
BUTANE have brought you 104 pictures of Swisher and adjoining
county farms It lias been a pleasure to present originals
of thc c picture to the owners or occupants of these farm
homes The Herald had planned to continue this scries for at
least another year due to its popularity however it is impossible
to secure additional pictures It is really much more
difficult to photograph these farms than the average person
imagines The boys who made these photographs weic aerial
photographers during World War II On rcconnaisancc
missions they had to photograph at close range enemy positions
When they returned to civilian life they utilized this
knowhow by originating the Mystery Farm Idea From
Harlan Iowa these boys have branched out into almost
every state in the union
To take these photographs it is necessary to have a
particular type of photographic equipment And the picture
mus be snapped at a paiticular second or it will be too
kite
Hundreds of Herald readers have followed this series
closely and have been kind enough to make favorable commentsIt has been a special pleasure to work with Gwyn Vaughn
and Van and Ray Barbour for these past two years These
boys have at Jcast one thing in common they arc all hometown
boys who returned to Tulia after their war service to
enter business Both have been highly successful and arc considered
leaders in their respective fields All three were recognized
back in 1947 when the Herald ran a home town
Loy scries And they are just as enthusiastic about Tulia
today as they were back in 1917
Although this scries ends today we speaking for the
Herald sincerely hope that the followers of this feature will
continue to think of CASE when you think of farm machinery
and that will will remember BARBOUR BROS when
you think of butane or home appliances
