A SITE FOB A THEATER.
Cfcarlfs Rogers, who lost his commodious
brick bcildicj?, on the corner of Commerce
aid Fannin streets, by the recent conflagra-
tion, will soon commence to build again.
He prop oses to replace the basement, which
will give a ground flonr on Faanin street.
The building of other stories will depend
upon general business that may de-
velop In the future. An oppor-
tunity is now presented Manager
Greenwsll to make arrandom9nts tot
a first class theater, with ample room for
pat queue, dress circle, galleries, stage,
dteefirg rooms, green-room, traps, ma-
chinery uj-d offices. The building that was
destic jed had a front of seventy five feet
and a depth of eighty feet. Mr. Kagers
owes Eeventy feet of ground back of the
original structure that oould be used for
the stage. The location is one black from
the belt of the street railway system, and
taking in the Fifth ward as an exten-
sive and growing cart of Houston, the thea-
ter wonla be centrally located, and could
be reached from all parts of the city by the
fine system of street railway now in use In
Houston. The city needs a new theater of
dimensions that will admit of the presenta-
tion, in fine style, of the most extensive
dramatic and operatic pieces that travel in
the United States. It will be sate
to astert that Mr. Greenwall would have
no trouble in getting up a stock company
for th6 erection of anew theater In this city.
Large companies playing here constantly
complain ot beicc; cramped for space, and
are frequently compelled to display seoond-
class spectacular scenery that they carry
with them for use in halls in very sm»ll
towns. Houston has a population of about
85.0C0 inhabitants, and should have a thea-
ter cpEiti-enfurate with her size and com-
mercial importance.

speaker took the affirmative side of the
question, and preached a lengthy disoourse.
Ministers from some of tha other churches
