The question of wrtiut fchs Cl^n-iift-Gael

plishing them, have heretofore been mat-

Inside which tho eeccata of this dangerous,
oath bound society l&f hidden, To-day
the Hepublic publishes in full the official
form of initiation, togethe* with the
text of the oaths and a statement
of the Clanna-GaeJ'a aims; in fact,
the complete constitution of the revolu-
tionary society. It may be accessary to
state that these are taken from tfcs little
book which is furnished each aiembtur upon
his admission to the association. None but
those who take all the outb« and are formal-
ly admitted to membership can come into
possession of one of these books. Hut it
would be a betrayal of confidence te publish
just bv what iiioatui tiio Hepublic succeeded
jr. learning the facts herain given. Suflice
it to say that the statements are authentia
and thfc circumstances connected with secur
ing them, thrilling in the extreme. If made
ktoown they might endanger Ui'e lives of
several persons.
The name of tho society ta not Clun-na
Gael, but United Brotherhood. It was or-
ganized In 18 iO by an Irish patlot, who now
figures conspicuously in horoe rule affairs
in En gland. The first branch of the society
was formed in Dublin, vfherathe little book
above referred to was printed. Afterward
it spread throughout tho United Stctas,
each branch or section being given a num-
ber. It is almost exclusively confined to
the larger cities, Philadelphia and Chicago
being the headquarters in this country. The
membership of the bratsches or sections is
numerically small, particular care being
taken as to the character of those admitted.
Each member has his individual num-
ber, which, as will be seen be-
low, he gives *s a password before
being admitted to any of the-meetings. The
candidate for admission takes a solemn oath
hever to reveal what occurs at the meetings,
nor the names of a.nr of the members. He
is Informed that the brotherhood is com-
posed of Irishmen banded together to free
Ireland, the first nec3B3ary step for which
is secrecy, without which they believe that
defeat will cloud thair brightest effort^.
"They, therefore, shall hssitate at no sacri-
fice to maintain it!"
The strictest precaution* are taken to
guard against the admission of any one
who might seek to enter it fa* the purpose
of betraying the society's secrets. Each
candidate is required to swear tbat he en-
tertains no mental reservations, and that
lie is not bound by any previous oath to ex-
Iiose anything relativa to the ordefl.
The object of the society is to establish a
republican form of govcrnmeut in Ireland,
and any member violating his duty is
warned that he is deserving of the .severest
punishment. He is solemnly adjured to
Keep all secrets as ha values bis life, and at
the hazard of bU life. A sword is used in
the initiation to signify that force alono
can accomplish the society's aim.
As important names aad the titles 0/ offi-
cers arc designated by ciphoi initials, the
following ke;i is furnished:
S. 6.—Stands for Senior Guardian.
J. G.— Junior Guardian,
V. C.—United Brotherhood.
Ur'd—Brotherhood.
I). (Alone)—Brother, also Company.
&— Senior.
Jsfmboe—Ireland.
Fobmboe—England.
Jsjti—- Irish.
J.sjtiufo—Irishmen.
P. G.—Past Guardian. i
C.—-Commander.
.P.-Order.
J. S. C.—Irish Revolutionary Brothor-
iiood.
P. tj. —Open Sesame.
F. C.—Fenian Brotherhood.
It will be noticed that the simple device
pf using the alphabetical letter neKt suc-
ceeding the real one is used to afford neoes-
Bary concealment and protection in cast of
discovery, Thus:
X. F o-h-m-b-o-p. 3, J-s-f-m-b-o-9.
2. E-n-g-l-a-u-d. 4. 1-r-e-i-a-n-d,
5. .T-s i-t-i-u-f-o. 7. V. C,
6. I-r-l-s-h-m-e-n. 8. U. B.
The oath furnishes what may be a possi-
ble clew to the Crania murder. The candi-
date solemnly pledges himself, under pen-
alty of death, not only "to keep strictly, se-
cret the name »nd everything connected
with this C'e from all not entitled to know
such secrets," but also that ho will "faith-
fully preserve the funds of the
C'e for the cause of Jsjti
revolution alone. If the accused men
sverc guilty of peculation or of the misap-
propriation of the brotherhood's funds they
were responsible for a llagrant violation of
the brotherhood,s oath, punishable by
death, and their anxiety to remove Dr.
fDronin or to prevent his damaging charges
frorji becoming public would* therefore, be
perfectly natural.
Those who have not actually tried to
riossoss themselves of information concern
rig the Clan-na-Gael or, more properly
fpeaking, the United Brotherhood, can
avp no conception of the difficulties at-
tending such work, or the profound mys-
tc:y surrounding the brotherhood and its
oiembers. It. is one of tho strongest organ-
izations in the world, and, ha»ing for its
jklm the overthrow of the English govern-
ment in Ireland by violence pure and sim-
ple, it is an organization dealing death to
traitorous mam bars as well as to its en-
emies.
Members of the brothurhood are express-
ly forbidden to speak of the society to out-
siders, to admit that they are members of
it, or to refer to others whom they know
$S be fellow members, and since the death
ipf Dr. Cronin these several injunctions
liavo been rigidly observed, so that it has
jbeeu found impossible to secure any valua-
ble information from the brotherhood
iriembers.
Following is the oath which the candidate
for membership is required to take: I do
Solemnly swear In the presence of Almighty
God, that I will labor, while life is left me,
po establish and defend a republican form
of government in Jsfmboe; that I will keep
strictly secret the name and everything con-
uocted with this C'e from all not entitled to
'know such secrets; that I will obey and
comply with the constitution and laws 01
the C'e, and that I will faithfully
preserve the fuuus of tho C'e for
ilio c.'iuse of Jsjti revolution alone, as speci-
fied in the constitution; that I deem it my
special duty and mission to promota and
foster sentiments of union, brotherly lova
jaiul nationality among all Js tinfo; that I
take this obligation without any mental
reservation, holding tho t'.mo foiever bind-
ing upon me, and that any violation thereof
01" desertion of my duty to the Br'd is in-
famous and meets the severest puuish-
ment so help me God,"
The assistant eonduftira than retire the
C- fa.'-H candidates toward S.
Brothi rs all raise their right hand and
say: "We are ail witnesses to the obliga-
tion yen have takan." 0.—''Keep it as you
value jvar life.1' J. G.—"Keep It at the
hazard of your life."
Tho <r. greets the new brothers by
Shaking hands, and will addivss them as
follows.
"Brothers In the name of Jsfmbce I
greet you and welcome you to our ranks.
U.he forms used in your initiation, although
simple, are significant. You were blind-
folds! to scrcen our members from expos-
ure to strangers. The swovd used is to im-
press upon you that the freedom of Jsfmboe
can be secured by force alone, and that
our duty is to nerve and strengthen
ourselves to wrest by the sword
our political rights from Fohmboe.
Vour restoration to light and free-
dom is typical of the object which this C'e
is sworn to obtain for our country. May
God strengthen you to work with zoal tind
fidelity in the cause whose duties you have
undertaken. Be mindful to moke that
(-acred cause the symbol of Union and Fra-
ternity; cast aside all petty jealousies and
sectional views, with one oojact ever in your
mind—Jsjti independence.

A Peculiar Duel.
A very peculiar preliminary to a death
sentence that deserves to bj put on record
was that in vogue in Franconia in the fif-
teenth century—that is, iu the days of the
ordeal, in which heaven itself was supposed
to take a hand in the distribution of justice.
In case a woman had been made to suffer in
reputation by a man she was at liberty to
challenge him to combat, which took pla: 3
in the following way; A regular ring was
formed for spectators and chairs were placed
for the judges. Iu the middle of the ring
was a hole about three feet deep, in which
the man, armed only with a club, had to
defend himself against the woman, who was
armed with a stone weiring a pound tied
up in a handkerchief and attached to a slen-
der willowy stick. The lady had a space
measuring ten feet in diameter in which to
evolutaand to attack The rules were as
follows: If the man in attempting to strike
the woman touched the ground with arm or
hand he made one error. If he made three
such, or if the woman succeeded in disarm-
ing htm, he was declared defeated, and was
then delivered over to the executioner to ba
put to death, which was by being buried in
the same hole iu which ho had vainly at-
tempted to defend himself. But if the man
succeeded it thwarting the attacks of the
woman or in disarming her, he was de-
clared the victor, and the woman herseli
was then the victim, and was sentenced to
death and buried alivo. (New York World.
