The following thoughtful article is ex-
t acted from the colamns of the Western
Kami: "Iu every ma i's life there aro lost
opportunities, aud the wonder is that man.
with his intelligence, should so often thiiak
little of the chances that he has to do
pood and still does not improvo them. Tho
average man likes to do k°°(1 rather than
evil. It may never be thought of by many
that a vast deal or harm is done in this
world by men who aro no'; intentionally
bad. They simply do nothing. They fold
their nrms in the midst of a crying neces-
sity fofr action, and permit things to drift
us they will. It is not always the man who
puts himself at the head of an armed force
and strikes boidly at government who
Is tho most dangerous traitor. Tho
greatest and most dangerous treason may
be in tho very camp of our friends. It may
be the man who is asleep on his* arms
ivhile the enemy is making ready for an at-
tack which can only be repelled by the ac-
tive effort*# of the man who is slumbering.
"The American people—tho American
fa rmer—is in the presence of a great social
and political necessity. .Socially and polit-
ically our affairs have become warped and
. discordant. In a country where equality of
responsibility and equality of privilege arc
supposed to exist, and to insure which we
have spent fabulous wealth and sacrificed
hundreds of thousunda of lives, wo ar;* con-
fronted with a glaring inequality of both
responsibility and oriviloge. There have
grown up in our midst such cias distinc-
tions and ajstems of favoritism that it :s a
startling Tact that cur republican civiliza-
tion does not materialljr differ, except in
decree, from tho civilization ol' ^ those
councries where tho lew by virtue of birth
or wealth assume tho rig t to live
upon tho many and to absorb all the
wealth that tho multitude create. We are
fast arriving at that point where our repub-
lic exists only iu name, aud while tho rest-
less millions of monarchial nations are
Ltrivlnn to better their condition through
the only means that oiler in such nations-
re volution—we are neglecting to use the
ballot box to preserve our liberties and have
been sitting idly by svhile the chains of op-
pression have been in process of being riv-
eted upon us and our children, especially
the latter. It is this latter fact that makes
the people's apathy the most mysterious.
The average father will protect his child
with his life if need be. The child's welfaro
is uppermost in the parents' mind. He
will btrugvrle and suiter great per-
sonal sacrifices to educate him and to
give him a good start in life. Yet in this
matter of correcting existing evils the
fathers of thousands of boys are deliber*
nteiy inviting a life of hardship aud injus-
tice for the children, and laying the founda-
tion for an ultimate bloody conflict in
which some o£ these boys must bo sacri-
ficed. Tho world will never again see a
time in which there will not be one spot of
earth at least on which men can be l'ree and
equal beiore the law. The best days of this
republic have planted iu tho Heart a love
for freedom and justice and equality which
can never bo smothered; and if the time
evet* shall come when this republic shall
actually cease to exist, then men somewhere
--and as likely as not. hero—will riso up to
strike another blow for the God given rigaU
of man."

The Philadelphia Evening Telegraph in
discussing the federation of labor and capi*
tal uses this language: "Two Mich great
and powerful forces as combined capital
and combined labor, whoso daily relations
aro so close, should for their mutuality of
interest bo at peace; their relations should
be not only amicable but cordial. At pres-
ent they are far from cordial, and generally
they are hardly peaceful. Labor has made
the mistake everywhere of assuming an
Aggressive position, having been led to do
su in some countries, of which England 13 i
probably one, by tho unfairness and |
oppression of capital. In this country i
many pestiferous demagogues have been j
tho cause chiefly of labor's antagonistic I
.altitude towards capital It is a piepos- j
terously absurd attitude, as capital is
ifre thing by which labor exists. It is only
in tho industries that capital is dependent
on organized labor; b it everywhere labor,
whether organized or not, is dependent
x-.pon capital. The capitalist can find fields
for investment in inactive places but labor
cm invest itself only in industry. Capital
clearly has the advantage in any contest
K'fxveen the two; and the folly of labor is,

The Subtrea«ury Plac,
In an editorial on the subtreasury plan,
tho National economist of Washington, D.
C., the official organ of the Farmer*' Alli-
ance and National Industrial union con-
cludes aa follows: "Within the next ten
yea's the population of the country will
cumber fully 85,000.000, the public debt will
*>e paid, ami tho national banks eliminated.
The decrease in the volume of money by re-
fciriuur national bank currency, and the
natural loss by (ire, Hood, or exportation of
ftne other forms of currency remaining will
more than offset the natural increase
through the mines. This being true beyond
» dispute, how will an inadequate volume
for 01,000,000 of people be made to serve a
population of 85.000.000? This is '.he ques-
tion that the statesmen of this nation
should consider nd for the neglect of
which the people .n tho near future will *
hold them to a strict account. This propo-
sition must be met. It must be met a*, once,
if the constitution is inadequate it should
be amended to meet the exigency, as if. has
been amended fifteen times in tho past.
There is no time to waste in ridiculing the
details of this measure or inserting its un
constitutionality. If the details are not
complete it is the duty of congress to make
them so. If there is no constitutional pro-
vision covering the issue of cheap money
to the people, let that instrument be
amended. J ust so long as the alliance press
audits members permit the opposition to
discuss simply the details of the plan just
so long will its true principles be kept out
of signt. But if both press and people will
insist upon a discussion of its principles
the whole matter will assume a different
aspect and tho result will be beneficial to
