new orleans, la., oct. 26.—following
yesterday's sharp advance market was re-
actionary today, notwithstanding cables to
have been much better than due the dis-
position as to reallzq pending developments
in toil ay's rail strike conference i11 chicago.
tend ng to support the contention that this
year"! crop is somewhat larger than the
government's forecast of oct. i for a yield
of only 8,537,000, which was re|teroted yes-
terday at washington, the weekly review,
issued today, stated that the yield in sortie
sections of north carolina and south caro-
llnu was exceeding expectations. neverthe-
less the crop is undoubtedly a small 01^,
•ind any utile increase in the indicated
small production will not alter the situation
very much, if at mil, as prospects arc, if
the railroad strike is settled, that the indi-
cated increase in lomiitic and foreign con-
sumpt.on of american cotton this season
will tax the ability of tho south to provide
requirements of the world, the large carry
over from last acajon notwithstanding. if
the threatened rail strike is averted, market
will likely advance, if not probably decline,
to what extent depending on nature and
how loi'g th« walkout may last. spots
closed steady, 25 down, sales 86" to arrive
325; middling 18.75,
new orleans.
new orleans, ls., oct. 2'!.—steady selling
was felt by cotton in the early trading to-
day and price* lost 19 to 27 points by the
end of the first half hour of business, de-
cember trading down to 18.60. selling ap-
parently came mainly from professionals
and was based on tho argument that trade
conditions in general, particularly in eu-
rope, were not favorable.
in the trading up to 12 o'clock tlis dccllno
was widened to 25 to 35 points, december
falling to 18.50. railroad strike news was
•not regarded as wholly satisfactory and
caused some selling andrepoit.s of b'ts sp it
demand in western belt markets also re-
suled in offerings for which there was no
great demand.
the early afternoon brought a flurry of
selling upon 'lie active circulation of ad-
verse opinions regarding tho progress of rail-
road strike negotiations, i11 the trailing up
to 1:30 prices were 34 to 41 points tirdor
the close of yesterday, december sailing
down to is.45.
