MAISON ROUGE SITE This old house in Galveston is
believed to have been built over the original site of Jean
Lafittcs Malson Rouge or red house headquarters of his
commune on the eastern end of the island There are nu- >
merous underground cisterns and n thick composition stone-
wall that extends far into the ground The cisterns and walla
nre made of a material common in the early Florida build-
ings and used extensively in Lafittcs time but afterwards
replaced by concrete These and other indications seem to
substantiate the general belief that this old structure covers
the ruins of the red house of the buccaneer
Why We Need A
Across Red Deer
1 Because we have never had an adequate bridge The one which just washed
out was Inadequate unsafe and should have been condemned
2 Because the area served by this bridge Is a sizeable portion of Hemphill
County a portion producing considerable tax income for both county and
school
3 Because the additional taxes resulting from these Bridge Bonds would be
negligible and because the amount spent on this bridge is more than off-
set by what HAS BEEN spent on numerous smaller bridges in other sections
of the county
4 Because the people who happen to be living North of Red Deer should not
be penalized any more than if Red Deer happened to be South ot Canadian
thus cutting off those who live In that area
