Cabbed Germany ten a years dgo
and rob a whole generation ot its
rightlut peace and progress and
centuries of accumulated wealth
Here 1s how It happened Hitler
had no right to rule Germany but
there was nobody to stop him As a-
political demagogue he had gained
some following The German people
werehungry For three sad years
they had endured unemployment
and starvation It took no brains to
guess what they wanted Hitler of-
fered them jobs and bread subsist-
ence in return for work much
work
They Fell In Line
With what they believed was all
to gain and nothing to lose the
Germans followed Hitler followed
blm headlong into what they did
not want the most pitiless war of
aggression ever known Will it hap-
pen again Hltlerism to be sure
can hardly last but powermadness
will not vanish from the earth with
Hitler Grasping men will always
scheme for power How can the
worlds right thinking people keep
them from getting it
Examine records of the past to
learn how despots work and you will
see one glaring similarity Dicta-
tors climb to power over wreckage
wrecked lives wrecked fortunes
blasted hopes All men have inalien-
able rights to life liberty and the
pursuit of happiness and they do
not sell their privileges to work and
vote and worship God Only cxtor
Uon takes it from them When men
are doing ccn fairly well they hold
on to their freedom They turn It
loose only in dire calamity when
their children are weeping for bread
Safety In Prosperity
In a very real sense prosperity
protects human liberty No Hitler
can hypnotize and enslave a pros-
perous nation People who are eco-
nomically Independent are dictator
proof With full employment for la
bor and consequent high prices for
farm products with ff ctqrlcs busy
turning out marketable things for
peaceloving customers totalitarian
rule is impossible call It Regimen
tMlon or hatnot
Certainly drclalorship is unlikely
In America somebody will say
but what has that to do with per-
manent peace Wc are in war now
on account of dictatorships in Eu-
rope How can we stop it over
there Thats a fair question
and fortunately it has an answer
Prosperity in Europe depends on
prosperity in America Wo have
only 6 percent of the worlds popu-
lation nevertheless the world pros-
pers when we prosper
Uncle San Buyer
In normal > ears the United States
turns out 40 rcrccnt of all the usable
things manufactured In order to
do this factories of the United
States utilize 40 percent of the
worlds output of raw materials Un-
cle Sam is Mother Earths big cus-
tomer Prospority follows the Amer-
ican bujer to the four winds Trou-
bles in Germany over which Hitler
climbed to power resulted In part
from Americas big depression that
started in 1029 The most important
step toward a lasting world peace is
prosperity in America
The brightest spot In world politics
today is the fact that business lead-
ers in the United States are making
plans for full employment through
private enterprise starting with the
armistice and full employment
means plenty of buyers and lively
marketsfor farm products It was
private enterprise that made Uncle
Sam rich enough to be the worlds
best customer Private enterprise
made America the bountiful source
of world prosperity Some seek to
destroy it only that they may climb
to power over its ruins Be as-
sured however If it is destroyed
our unique prosperity goes with iV
Sabotage
An interesting letter has come to
my desk I regret that It is neces-
sary for mo to withhold the writers
name I am giving it to you with-
out comment beyond saying that I
am laying the case tactfully before
Mr Prentiss Brown administrator
of the OPA confident that he will be
as anxious as anybody to correct
such abuses if they are at all gen-
eral
Dear Dr Bensoni
I wonder if you arc In a position to
tell Captain Wckenbacker or some-
body else who gives a hoot that
absenteeism among Industrial work
hA < lfi M >
crs is not tiie only kind of sabotage
that plays havoc with the war ef
fort But let me start at the front
end of my story
RIckcnbacker Is an Idol of mine I
never met him but they could adorn
the Captain with two stars or break
him down to two stripes and he
would sUll be Eddie RIckcnbacker
to me and to many a kid my age
over fifty who like myself loved
to strip an old jaloppic rcvup Its
motor paint the skeleton red and
call It a racing car
Hero Worship Ma > bc
Of course I listened to Rickcn
backers radio talk here a while
back and what he said was still on
my mind the next day when I went
to my local ration board after gaso
Une coupons for my truck Im a
union man at heart certainly no
laborbaiter but Im a farmer All
the time I worked at my trado I
was buying some land and my truck
a Ford pickup is used exclusively
tor farming the same as me Im
positive that Im not prejudiced Im
against nobody but the criemy at
home as well as abroad regardless
of his calling
At the rationboard office I had to
fall in line of course Im getting
used to that now and dont mind
much The man ahead of me in
tine had a job in a plant where they
make airplane parts He had just
got a promotion aid started work-
ing under a new boss in a new de-
partment Hs had come to get gaso-
line coupons too He lives 20 miles
from the Job and said he couldnt
get to work the next day without
gasoline neither himself nor four
neighbors who ride with him
He Didnt Get It
The fellow was an honest looking
chap He explained everything plain
enough for me to understand it and
Im no braintrustcr He said he
knew he needed a form part of
which had to be filled out by his
employer and he had asked the Ra
tion Board for such a form but did
not get it He conceded that the
Board had probably overlooked his
request for a special form innocent-
ly hj cfran ge ° 3obs being a sort
of irregularity
The man went on to explain that
vhen ho had fixed up hl3 prpcrs
all but the ono he didnt haL > and
had brought them to the Ration
Boards office he was told that tho
employers form also had to bo
completed Ho declared that he had
attended to It immediately but on
account of the delay he failed to
get his papers in on time to receive
official action at the Boards last
meeting All he got from the man-
ager of the Board was assurance
that the case would be considered
at the Boards next meeting four
days off
offTIvc
TIvc Workers Absent
If the man had wanted to buy
25000 barrels of gasoline in I C C
drums he couldnt have been treated
any cooler but actually all he want-
ed was an emergency supply to take
him and four other airplane builders
to work for four days until the Board
met He tried to emphasize that
point but It only served to irritate
the manager who began phonograph
ing Your case will be considered
when the Board meets
I am telling you truthfully It com
pletely got my goat I got the gaso
line coupons I went after Ma be 1
ought not to be kicking about a head-
ache that belongs to somebody else
But you see I was still all built up
with the common sense patriotism
of Captain Rickenbacker He had
talked about how American soldiers
In tropical fox holes need support
from the air He had made stay-
ing home from work look like a fel-
ony halfway between arson and
murder
Abuse of Authority
Personally I think the fellow sit-
ting right there looking down his
nose and opening his mouth just
wide enough to say Your case will
be considered when the Board
meets had enough authority to al-
low this man some gasoline to take
five war workers to their jobs But
maybe not Perhaps he is tied down
by rules and gets pretty tired every-
day listening to arguments ovei
things he can do nothing about But
its a rotten situation if the man
ager of a Ration Board cant allow
an emergency ration of two gallon
per man to keep them making air-
planes four whole days
Maybe this fellow likes his job
After all if it wasnt for the war he
wouldnt have that position of au-
thority Maybe he thinks its to his
personal Interest to let the war la si
as long as possible I cant believe
that is whats the matter with him
but the results are the same
