OUBi GUEST EDITORIAL
By Fred A Hobart
In response to your request for
an article in regard to the school
situation I am writing you a
letter endeavoring to outline my
viewpoint on the subject as a
taxpayer of the Washita and MK
districts and as a longtime res-
ident of Hemphill county
Most of our property Is In the
Washita district and In referring
to OUR district I mean the
Washita I have not been ap-
pointed as spokesman for the
district and the opinions I set
forth are strictly my own but
In talking with a good many of
the landowners of our district
I believe this letter reilects the
views of most of them
Everyone I know Is In favor of
good schools To my way of
thinking by far the most import-
ant thing about a school are the
teachers and I think most of
them are underpaid I meanthe
good ones Poor teachers arent
worth anything and should be
eliminated It Is also nice to
have a fine building a fine gym
naslum and fine equipment It
is also very expensive to have
and maintain this fine building
and equipment a tough prop
osition to dig up funds for espce
lally in a county without large
oil and gas revenues to draw on
as is the case in some counties
Land more than anything else
bears the brunt of the taxation
you have to levy to run a setup
like this and It is plenty tough
on the landowner in such a lis
trlct especially In bad times
What the solution to your
problem is I do not know It It
your districts problem just the
same as our district and all the
others have problems and my
belief Is that every district will
have to work out Its own salva
tlon the same as every Individ-
ual has to In the final analysis
From reading some of the re
cent articles it would appear to
an uninformed leader that the
people of the outlying districts
are obtaining something for
nothing in sending their child-
ren to Canadian Such however
Is not the case Our district and
the others are paying the charge
per child for tuition each year as
demanded by the Independent
School district and paying It
without squawking We are also
furnishing our own transporta
tion and paying for that too It
Is true that the children of our
district arc using the fine build-
ing and equipment your district
has furnished but do not over-
look the fact that we did not de-
mand it or vote on It
We happen to be out of debt
in our district and we hope to
stay out We have just finished
voting to Increase our school tax
rate from one dollar to a dollar
and a half We have no desire
to materially Increase the valu-
ations on all property In our dis-
trict which would happen at
once If we became absorbed by
the Independent School district
nor do we care to help assume
the responsibilities for debts we
did not incur or for future debts
we would have nothing to do
with Incurring
We simply feel that our own
school finances and affairs are
better handled by our own dis-
trict than they would bo If ad-
ministered by the Independent
School district We expect to pay
our fair share of the cost of send-
ing the children from our district
to the Canadian school but we
still wtfnt to run our own bus-
iness
