operated by Dee Dewala At Brit be wai
believed to be Mr Ledlorte bead of New
Eaitiad uUUUei lloldom a friend of

blm over tbo head and leave him along
lido of Ibo road A car believed to have
been Died lo the murder was raised from
the quarries where It wai found A
woman body was discovered Inside
Having received proof that dope was
found In the stomach of the murdered
man Tope asked doctor to examine the
woman In the car He alto asked New
York to check on the pilot of Ledforge
CHAPTER XII
He was clad when nt last Doctor
Mcdford arrived and Tope roused
lo hear what the medical examiner
had to say
She was strangled Tope the
Doctor reported An ignition wire
knotted tight around her throat I
havent had a chance to check on
the drug end yet came ahead so
as to get things ready here
Tope frowned Is she big or lit-
tle he asked
Large for a woman
Then she was drugged first
Tope said crisply He couldnt
have overpowered her Hes a small
man
Steps outside and Cumberland
and Joe Dane were here Banions
right behind us with the ambu-
lance Cumberland reported
Tope Joe says he cant stand this
waiting any longer Says if you
dont do something hes going to
Adam saw Joe Dane grin slightly
Why Joesright Tope agreed
I guess its time to clear It up
Well want to get ready to make the
arrest
Well Im glad to hear It old
man Cumberland said with
heavy relief Who is If
Tope hesitated If I told you
myself you wouldnt believe me
he confessed I want you to hear
two or three things first from oth-
ers Then youll sec Im right
Who Cumberland asked Who
are your witnesses
Well said Tope calmly yet
with a deep triumph In his tones
first one is lloldom I know enough
about what happened so 1 can make
him talk now He wont want to
because hes In It but he doesnt
know theres murder in the busi-
ness When he does hes bound lo
tell the truth He wasnt In on the
killing Just the kidnap end Hell
talk to clear himself of a murder
charge
He had their still attention now
And the next is Kell Tope con-
tinued He knows just as much as
lloldom knows Hes lied to us so
far but he wont lie now Hell tell
all he knows because his wife was
murdered and he loved her I saw
him awhile ago Hell talk
He looked from one to another
wagged his head Youll think llol
dom is lying he warned them
Youll say It couldnt have hap-
pened the way hell tell jou It did
happen But Ill show you that it
could Bob Flint was Iloldoms pi-
lot Ho flew up here Friday night
with a passenger spent most of the
night up here But he had a girl
here Sally Tcnnant Her fathers
Iloldoms gardener If I know any-
thing about the way a > oung fellow
acls Thnt saw Sally while he was
up here Probably told her who his
passenger was warned her not
to tell
But shell tell now because that
passenger drugged young Flint aft-
er they got back near New York
and after he got out of the plane
drugged him so that Flint went to
sleep In the air and crashed and
was killed Im having an autopsy
on Flints body lo prose he was
drugged
He concluded So there you arcl
Sally Tennant will tell you who
Flints passenger was that night
and Kcll will tell you what happened
to Ledforge on the way up here Fri-
day and lloldom will tell you why
It happened
And If you dont believe them
Doctor Loud the dentist down In
mdgcomb can possibly tell you
what kind of teeth Ledforge had
Doctor Medford protested in some
surprise Doctor Loud But hes
dead Tope
The Inspector whirled on him
stared at him Dead he echood
Why yes He dropped dead two
or three weeks ago
Tope seemed to tremble
Dropped dead he repeated He
shook his head We needed him
he confessed
Ned Quill came In and Tope
spoke quickly
You gee the Tennant girl Quill
Sure bad a long talk with her
tho trooper replied and he added
Shed been to Wew York to young
Flint funeral Or whatever you
e lUt They had him cremated
Tope suddenly wag pale Cre-
mated he protested In a deep dis-
may Ha whirled to Doctor Med-
ford Then they Cant do an autop-
sy Doctor Medford shook hlg head
and Joe Dane said almost exultant-
ly Mot on ashes Tope old man
Tope hesitated then turned to
Quill again Did Miss Tennant
sea blm last Friday night he
asked
QjJll ghoolc Ms head In tome sur-
prise JJWby no Hadnt seen him
tot twwree weeW h answered
She jr h hasnt been up herel
Tope was a man not easily shak-
en but he was shaken now He sat
down as though wearily and Joe
Dane said derisively Your evl
dence isnt coming through Tope
Quite a bit of static
Adam cried loyally But theres
still lloldom and Kelll
Why sure Mat Cumberland
agreed relieved Well send for
them Joe > ou go telephone
Joe Dane went out but Tope said
slowly You know Mat Ive got
an idea that this whole thing has
busted on me Well have to figure
something else some other way
And he added almost apologetical-
ly Its just a hunch but Im will-
ing to make a small bet that nei-
ther one of them
He had no time to stale the
wager For Joe Dane returned
Youve spilled it now Tope
Dane cried furiously You wouldnt
let me question lloldom And you
told Kell his wife was dcadl Youve
had your way so far made a mess
of the whole thing Now Ill take
charge
Tope looked at him thoughtfully
Get out Youre tlirouuM
Kell kill himself he asked in
mild tones
Yes Joe Dane retorted With
his own suspenders Hung himself
to his cell door And Iloldoms got
a concussion unconscious Theyve
taken him to the hospital and the
doctor thinks hell die So he wont
talk either Blast it if you hadnt
meddled Id have had his story
had the whole thing by nowl Get
out Youre through Im taking
charge
Tope got up slowly like an old
man Why Joe he said Im
sorry I hoped I could hand this case
to jou on a platter But I can
still
You can get out young Joe
Dane shouted Mali He appealed
to Cumberland If you let this dod-
dering old hasbeen fiddle around
here any more Im through Ill
resign Tell him to drag himself
out of town
Cumberland hesitated but Tope
spoke Dont bother Mat he
said Im going Joe I hope you
get it all straight spite of the trouble
Ive made Adam Bruce watch-
ing him could have wept for this
old man Then Tope caught his eye
Adam jou want to drive me back
to Mrs Tope he asked
Why sure Inspector said
Adam
In a sober silence while the oth-
ers watched them without speaking
they moved out to the curb and the
waiting car
They got In and Adam at the
corner turned toward RIdgcomb
but Tope spoke then
Walt a minute Adam he said
I want to buy some things before
we go Drive downtown
Adam obeyed him What Is It
you want Inspector he asked I
can get them for you
But Tope instead of answering
inquired You a good rifleshot
Adam
Adam whirled toward him star-
tled incredulous and he saw Tope
was not downcast and humiliated
not the crushed old man he had
seemed a moment ago but alert
his eyes intent his color high al-
most beaming
Why yes Adam admitted
Pretty good
Then well buy you a rifle Tope
said You pick out one that youre
sure of at anything up to say two
hundred yards And after that we
want to get an outboard motor that
will start every time
He saw Adams Incredulous be-
wilderment and chuckled
And the only other thing he
concluded Is oneol these vests
poddedwith some patent stuff that
makes them float like lifepreserv
er Now go along Adam Ltts
see it we can find one In this little
town
During the fe forenoon hours while
Tope brought Uie structure of bis to

vestlgattons to the point of comple-
tion only to see it collapse like a
house of cards Mrs Tope and Bee
Dewaln and Mr Ebcrly waited at
the Mill Presently Ned Quill ar-
rived seeking Tope but Tope was
not here
Ho ought to be by now the
trooper protested He left fiveten
minutes before I did
Left where Mrs Tope asked
Was he coming here
I thought he was Ned declared
and their questions prompting him
he told the story of that scene In
Will Banions chapel when Topes
case crumbled and Joe Dane took
charge
Id like to slap Joes face said
Bee hotly
But Mrs Tope only asked Where
is Inspector Tope
Why maam he left us there In
Banions I stopped In here to tell
him not to take it too hard Ill jog
up to the quarry now see how
theyre doing with the car Tell the
old man Im for him will you
He started his engine with a kick
and wheeled out Into the highroad
and so away
Ten minutes later Tope and
Adam reached the Mill These two
had been some time In finding in
North Maddcrson the things Tope
sought and when they had secured
these objects and stowed them
somehow well concealed In the
back of the little car Adam looked
at the old man Inquiringly
Whats all that for he asked
Tope chuckled Why Adam he
said cheerfully I thought Id take
you out to shoot a flshl
Adam looked at him and after a
moment he said gravely Inspec-
tor Ive gone along blindly so far
But If youre suggesting that I
shoot anything but fish Ill have to
know where we stand
Tope looked at him Why
Adam he suggested if you saw
one man trying to kill another man
and no way to stop him but to shoot
him you wouldnt wait for explana-
tions would you
You expect some one else to be
killed
I expect therell be a try to kill
two people before night Tope as-
sented simply
Who Adam demanded What
two people
Mr Eberly said Tope And
Miss Ledforge
Adam ejaculated Why Who
Tope hesitated IWell Adam he
ancesWhy
Why I take that kindly of you
Miss Dewaln But he couldnt be
Joe Dane and do different the In
spector assured Bee Dont go ex
pecting people to be different from
what they are He turned to Mrs
Tope I was thinking he said
that before we pull out of here you
might want to make a call some
where Like as not Miss Dewaln
would go with you Mr Eberly still
here and all right is he
Everly said from the doorway
Quite all right Inspector
And Mrs Tope asked surprised
Call On whom
Tope said Why on Miss Led
forge Shes a real nice woman
Why dont you get Miss Dewaln to
drive you down there He looked
at his watch Its going on three
oclock Time you get prettied up
and get there It will be Just about
time for her to give you a cup of
teaShe
She hesitated I think I know
whats In your mind she admit-
ted Ned Quill told us you sent for
Mr Ledforgea dentist But Ij that
possible
Its bound to be he assured her
soberly And he added Ill be
with Mr Eberly and youll be with
Miss Ledforge 1 Helooked at Bee

are my friends If ye do whatsoever
I command you John 1514
What kind of friends did Jesus
choose Did He limit His interest
to a select circle of very religious
people or to the cultured and edu-
cated folk of His day It may sur-
prise some Christian people who
have made the church a sort of ex <
elusive club to learn how wide were
the Interests and the love of the
Lord whom they profess to serve
I Children Were Welcomed Mark
1013 14
Observe that the disciples had
fallen Into that strange mode of
thought which excluded the chil
dren They were undoubtedly well
meaning In their desire to keep the
Master from the intrusion as they
thought of little ones He was en-
gaged In dealing with profound spir-
itual matters and they felt that He
should not be disturbed
Jesus was displeased He seldom
showed such feelings Usually He
bore silently with their mistakes
but this was so serious that they
must be rebuked
Little children belong with Jesus
Let us not forget It and let us not
fall to make it easy and attractive
for them to come to Jesus In our
churches and Sunday schools
II Witnesses Were Chosen Luke
61316
When Jesus left this world to re
turn to His Fathers throne He left
witnesses behind
It is significant that these men
were of simple childlike spirit un
learned In the formality of their day
but with a real genius for friendship
both with the Lord and with a needy
world
The close fellowship of our Lord
with these men was their course of
training for service and His blessed
friendship was the burning fire
which kept their hearts warm
through the dincult years ahead
III Women Were Helped Luke 8
13 I
Yes nnd they became the Lords
willing helpers just as a multitude
of their sisters in the faith have
been down through the ages
Women responded readily to the
Lords message of redemption and
to many of them He was able to
look for loyal and sacrificial serv-
ice
Women were not highly thought of
in His time on earth They are little
more than useful creatures In heath-
en lands today Christianity set
womanhood free raised it to Its glo-
rious place of dignity and useful-
ness Every woman ought to love
Jesus with deep devotion
Note that some of the wealthy
women gave of their means to serve
Jesus It Is one of the effective
ways in which women carry on
work for the Lord today
IV Outcasts Were Received
