to interfere in Louisiana matters,

Nicholl's militia are under arms,

No one is suffered to gain ad-

ers now assert that they have no
intention ot attacking the State

bden issued as a proclamation
from the Executive Department,
dated New Orleans, January II,
1877, and addret.'ed to the peo-
ple ot Louisiana:
I would be most profoundly
surprised and disappointed
should any 'ji.izen of Louisiana
at this moment so tar forget
himself as to be guilty of any
excess Whatsoever. There is
danger iu collecting together in
large bodies. I urge you, there-
tore, to retire at onct; peacefully
to your homes. The greater the
wrongs to which you have toaen
A dispatch just received trom
the United States Marshal at
New Orleans indicates that un-
authorized and armed bodies ot
men are organizaiLand assem-,
bling in a manncPto threaten
the peace and safety of the city.
If this be so, notify the leaders
ot such organization that they
must doist, on pain ot coming
in conflict with the United
States authority, sustained by
the military power of the gov-
ernment. Report at once the
situation and your action, keep-
ing in mind that this order has
no reference to a recognition ot
either of the claimants of the
governorship or either of the

Richmond, Jan. 9.—Samuel
II. Thornberg, charged with
robbing the bank of Peters-
burg, Va., on the 30th ult„ of
$10,700, returned to that city
last night, and surrendered
himself. lie says lie was at
ilarrisburg. Pa., when he heard
of the robbery, and that, as luff
was charged with crime and
guiltless, he at once started
back to face the charge and
jstablish his innocence. Upon
