" It is beginning to df wn upon
the Southern mind at last that
the splendid soil and climate of
the South are capable ot devel-
oping many articles besides cot-
'ton that will bring money to the
Southern purse. The sumptu-
ous appearance of the St. Louis
markets trom the month of Feb
ruary to the close ot the year re-
veal «!) interesting oondiflui of
Southern thrift. Early fruits
and vegetables of the choicest
kind are shipped from Southern
farms to many Northern cities,
and large sums of njotiey realU-.
ed u)>on them. It is believed
that more money per acre is re-
alized upon the minor products
of the South than upon the cot
ton of the South. This is spe-
cially true ot the states having
Iteht quick* soils as Georgia,
North and South Carolina and
Florida. The soils of these four
states would impoverish one who
would attempt to grow cotton for
a business, but will enrich any-
one who shall diligently and in-
telligently cultivate ail ot the
minor prod nets, such as fruits,
flowers and nurserv s^ock.
V
A lady in Georgia took 600
pounds of dried fruit to market
lecently and obtained $60 for it
—10 c^nts per pound—to her
astonishment. A bale of cotton
would not have brought her more
than $40 40 at 10 cents per pound
and would have required two
acres of land for its growth an J
consumed more time, labor and
money in its production and
making ready for market than
the fruit did, and it is likely that
the 600 pounds of truit were pro-
duced off less than half an acre.
