. A £ United States.—Lest it should be
"inferred from some recent articlts of the N.
*
Y. Courier and Euquirer that the Govern-
• xnent of the U. States was privy to the designs
♦of Santa Anna upon Mexico, and gave them
countenance, the Union of the 6th instant
makes the following explicit statement: It will
give satisfaction to the country, which would
not willingly see our government mingled in
the intrigues of the various aspirants for pow-
er in Mexico.
We deem it our duty to state, in the most
positive maftner, that our government has no
sort of connection with any scheme of Santa
Anna for the revolution of Mexico, or for any
sort of purpose. Some three months ago
some adventurer was in Washington, who
wished to obtain their countenance and aid
in some scheme or other connected with San-
ta Anna, They declined all sort of connec'
lion, co-operation or participation in any ef-
forts for the purpose. The Government of
the country declines all such intrigues o»
bargains. They have made war op?nly ii>
the face of the world. They mean to pros-
ecute it with all thiir vigor. They mean to
force Mexico to do us justice at the point ol
the sword. This, then, is their design—thi*
is their plan; and it is worthy of a bold, high-
minded and energetic people.
£3* Maj. A. D. Stuart, the U. S. Pay-
master at St. Louis, shipped one hundred and
twenty-five thousand dollars on board th
steamer Luella, on the 14th instant, for th«
payment of the Illinois troops at A'r^n.
