Rain.—On Saturday there
was a good rain in the Berlin
neighborhood, extending west
about three miles. In Bren-
ham we had a very light shower
in the foreno( n.

Camels— Saturday after-
noon a car load of camels pass
ed down the railroad. Quite a
crow'd of curiosity seekers gath-
ered at the depot to look at
them. They were from the
camel ranch in Bastrop county.
There seems to be no doubt
but that Martin Johnson, the ne-
gro who attempted to shoot
Rev. Hosea Garrett, escaped
from the constable. The rum-
ors that he has been hanged are,
we think, unfounded.
The board of appraisers ap
pointed by the city council are
about ready to report and wtf
raise the total assessment of the
city half a million dollars. In
consequence of this the schoo
tax assessment will only be
one-quarter of one per cent, in-
stead of three-eights.
513,600.— On Friday the
banking house of Giddings &
Giddings paid out over thirteen
thousand dollars to property
owners for lands and lots taken
for the use of the Santa Fe
railway's track in the city
Many of the recipients of the
money were supremely happy
having got splendid prices for
their lots.
Died.— At Houston, on the
2d inst, Henry Moldenhauer,
aged about 38 years.
Mr. Moldenhauer had been
a citizen of Brenham since 1868
and was highly respected by
his many lriends. He had for
some time been a sufferer from
that dread disease, consump
tion, and a few weeks ago went
to Fredericksburg in quest of
health; not finding it he was re-
turning home, but was overta-
ken by death at Houston.
The Oldest.—Elsewhere ap-
pears the advertisement of G.
Witteborg, who has the oldest
furniture store in the city, in
fact it is the pioneer house in
rhat line, having been estab-
lished some thirteen or fourteen
years ago. Mr. Witteborgkeeps
a fine and large assortment of
goods in his line, and says-in
his ad. that he is selling at
"short-crop prices." To newly
married couples and those con-
templating matrimony, he offers
special inducements.
* Negro Killed.— Thursday
night on the Lauderdale planta
tion near Long Point, Lewis
Babb, a negro, shot and killed
Milton McGowen, a negro boy
about 20 years old. Twenty-
three buckshot entered the
boy's body just below the stom-
ach, his mother, who was close
to him at the time, received
seven buckshot in the hip, but
is not mortally injured. The
cause of the shooting was a wo-
man. Babb escaped. The
shootist had a difficulty in the
same neighborhood some
months ago aftd was himself
shot.
na Hunt, <;f Caldwell and Miss
ennie Payne, of Burton. The
parents ]of Dr.JHill are here on
a visit. The Literary society is
in a flourishing condition and
ately celebrated its second an-
niversary.
Crops are almost a total fail-
ure. Corn enough for bread
will be made; the cotton crop
will be very light. No fisticuffs
have occurred to vary the mo-
notony of country life. No
weddings on the tapis.

asks if the Sunday aw lapplkls
to barber shops. The law doe§
not exempt barber shops, but
shaving and hair cutting bdijig
a necessity, as much so as wash-
ing ones face or eating 0|es
meals we can see no necessity
for their being closed. Sortie
contend that barber shops be-
ing a public necessity are not
amenable to the Sunday law.
Lawyers disagree as to the leg-
al construction of this law
which is justly characterized as
puritanical.
