From the Sherman Courier.}
When the seventeenth legis-
lature assembles it will have
the honesty of purpose and suf-
ficient interest in the people
and the newspaper press of the
country to investigate the last
tax law passed by the sixteenth
legislature wherein it will be
seen the advertising of delin-
quent tax lists taken from the
newspapers, which did the work
at from ten to twenty cents per
name, but whereas by the last
arrangement of the legislature,
the collector is allowed to write
three fists, put them in three
different places in the county,
and receive for the writing of
each name on one of these lists
one dollar. Or, in other words,
for writing one name three
times the collector is paid $3.
How a newspaper man, or
any man who loves justice, or
who has the interest of himself
or his state at heart, can con-
scientiously support any man
for re-election to the legislature
who was such a nincompoop as
to vote such a swindle on the
people, is past our comprehen-
sion. But this is not the worst
by any means. The land sharks,
who are ever on the alert, can
surrepticiously, maybe, in one
hour after these lists are posted
upon the side of a house, tear
them down, and a man's land be
sold without the least possible
knowledge that it has ever been
advertised. Parties out of the
state and owning lands in the
state, unless by mere accident,
would never know ot such ad-
vertisement at all, should such
posted lists even remain up un
Farmers are too apt to think
that politics are of no earthly-
consequence to them. But in
this they are mistaken. It is of
the utmost importance that tri-
(ed and true men be selected to
all positions. The farmers are
all in the majority, and unless
they take an interest in, and act
wisely they must not expect
legislation of any good to them,
but rather legislation by which
others will rob them of the prof-
its of their labor. This is the
most logic conclusion to arrive
at, and we are proud to observe
that the farmers are waking up.
Yet, while the fanners have been
sleeping, a horde of politicians,
sharks, and wolves in sheep's
clothing, have fastened them-
selves upon the country. These
politicians, sharks, and wolves
have shaded legislation so that
they have been enabled to live
off of the fat of the land with-
out work and the very produc-
ers of these luxuries have been
torcedto subsist upon the bones
or leavings. God never intend-
ed this. He gave us brain pow-
er, and lert it optional with us
whether or not we would use it.
There has been of late an awak-
ening, and we advise the drones
to either shed their coats, and
roll up their sleeves or prepare
for a bone diet.
Level Culture.
At the beginning of farm lite,
in order to learn the most ap-
proved methods, I employed a
first-class gardner and farmer
fresh from England. He per-
sisted ina mode of cultivation
precisely the reverse of what I
had been use to seeing—allow-
ing the mangles and sugar beets,
cucumbers, melons, tomatoes,
cabbage, etc., to go without any
hilling up. The mangles and
sugar beets stood high above
the ground the bulbous parts
exposed to the sun, many of
the mangles falling over and
growing crooked.The part of the
cucumber above the ground, as
I insisted, as rather a root than
a stem, should be surrounded by
earth, was left entirely to the
sun. I thought the sun would
parch the roots and they would
break or be injured when the
stem should fall from the up-
right to a horizontal position.
The Englishman would have
, his way. So a few of all sorts
til the first shower of rain or were i1med up,and fully as well
wind storm. We do hope the worked in other respects as his,

people's eyes may be opened

sions, under which they have

Keep Young.—Don't grow old
and rusty and cross, afraid of
nensense and fun. Tolerate
the follies and crudities of youth
Gray hairs and wrinkles you
cannot escape, but you need
not grow old in feelings unless
you choose. And sc long as
your age is only on the outside
you will win confidence from
the young, and find your life
all the brighter for contact with
theirs. But you have too many
grave thoughts, too many
weighty anxieties and duties,
too much to do to make this
possible, you say. The reason,
my friend, why you should cul-
tivate fun, nonsense, lightness
of heart—because you need
them so much, because you are
"wearj- with thinking." Then
do try to be young, even if you
have to be foolish in so doing.
