FANG FINDERS FACTS
BY ED SCHWEDLER
Club members worked sev-
eral dens on Saturday along
with members of the Venom-
aires and the Ft. Worth C.B.
Lions Club. A total of 37
snakes weighing 61 pounds
were brought in by one of
these groups.
Sunday morning some club
members working a den loca-
ted by Joe Mobley brought in
15 rattlers weighing 19
pounds. For their efforts two
members brought home 1st
and 2nd place prizes.
Bobby Grashel caught a rat-
tler measuring 60 1/4" for
2nd place and Leonard Kim-
mel won a trophy for the
longest non-poisonous snake
with a Central Texas Whip
measuring 54 1/2".
The unusually warm wea-
ther this winter was blamed
for the small number of rat-
tler being turned in. Many
hunters stated that the rattlers
had rrot denned up as they
normally do and a great num-
ber of dens were found empty.
Of the snakes turned in I
noticed that many were of ex-
ceptional length and weight.
The longest measured 61 in-
ches.
There were many snakes
over 4 1/2 feet long captured
in this area and the local
ranchers told us that they kill
a good number each year
measuring around 6 ft.
Sixty-eight hunters and over
a thousand spectators regis-
tered for the round-up, this
being the first ever held in
San Saba.
The Lions Club of San Saba
and the C.B. Radio Lions Club
of Ft. Worth sponsored this
hunt and certainly went out
of their way to be helpful and
hospitable to the many visitors
to San Saba.
The area around this town
is perfect for rattlesnake
hunting as it is a very rocky
terrain with many caves,
faults and natural dens.
The snake handling exhibi-
tion featured three members
of the Fang Finders in a new
roll. Appearing profession-
ally as "Schwedler's Snake
World" were myself, Charles
Baugus and Joe Mobley.
During the two days mem-
bers of the Fang Finders and
The Venomaires Snake Hunt-
ing clubs made appearances in
the Snake Pit which was lo-
cated in the old school gym.
This pit contained the rattlers
being turned in for prizes
and by afternoon seemed con-
siderably smaller than its ori-
ginal 8x16 feet. Diamondbacks
stacked up along the walls and
in the corners were about two
feet deep.
Ken Sims, Bobby Grashel,
Mike Schwedler and Jeannie
Mobley were among those
working the pit from the Fang
Finders while the Venomaires
were represented by Snider
York, Chuck Blythe, Dub
Smith, Robin Crow, GregFul-

Tornado Damages Home
Uproots Trees
Tornadie winds accompany-
ing a hail and rain storm
last Thursday afternoon did
considerable amage to a
large trailer home on the
Lazy K Ranch. Little Creek
Road.
The three bedroom home is
owned by A.R. Robards. Mr.
Roberds and his wife were at
the barn feeding when the tor-
nade struck around 4:45 p.m.
In the house at the time of
the wind was Lora Senter^
Mrs. Robert's daughter, and
Andra Hawkins, her niece.,
Neither were injured.
Contents of the trailer home
were strewn when the house
was moved three feet off its
blocks. The force opened ca-
binet doors and spilled can-
ned goods and dishes onto the
floor, moved furniture across
the room and created havoc
inside the home.
Two large stock trailers
were blown into the barn and
some large trees uprooted
near the Roberds barn. Tin
from outbuildings was strewn
over the ground.
Rain and hail did some da-
mage to the interior of the
trailer and ruined clothing.
Mrs. R.L. Knight who lives
in a house adjacent to the
trailer, said the roar of the
wind and hail was deafening.
She took her children into the
hall of the house and remain-
ed there until the storm pas-
sed.
However, no damage was
done to the house although a
large chair was blown fromthe
front porch.
Hail piled up in mounds ar-
ound the homes Mrs. Knight
said.
Mr. Roberds was busy Fri-
day trying to repair damage
to the trailer which he pur-
chased only two months ago.
"This was where the trailer in the background stood before the wind blew it over Thursday1"
these youngsters toid the Chronicle photographer. In the picture are Johnny Knight, Tommy
Knight and Alvin Senter.
