all , it OIK. tliird the di .t,mre
or microscopic organisms of fer-
mentation and disease—have
become so frequent that this
i classifit ation ol their varieties
; by Mr. VV, Hamlet may be of
| interest;
First - Microbes which ap-
j pear as points are called
! monads, monera or micrococci.
1 They are motionless, and may
i be regarded as the spores of
| other microbes.
i Second Motionless linear
j microbes—the bactcridians and
| the bacilli. To them belongs
Haci'|lu> anlhracis, which pro-
1 duces the dreaded splenic fever
of cattle and she .'p.
Third — Cylindrical mobile
microbes, having rounded ends
or contracted 111 the middle so
as to form an 8, arc the bacte-
ria proper. Among them is
Bacterium termoof putrifaction,
the commonest of all.
Fourth —- I'lexuous mobile
microbes. They look and act
like eels, and differ but little
from the equally active bacteria.
They are the vibrios.
Fifth— Spinal microbes, re-
sembling a corkscrew, and
mobile; spirilla spiro-chetoe.
l'heir presence in human blood
appears to be connectcd with
intermittent fever.
Sixth—Microbes with heads,
very active, having globules
larger and more refractive than
the rest of the body .it one or
both ends. These globules are
apparently spores ready to be
detached from a bacterium—
Bacterium capitatum.
Besides these six principal
states, the microbes form ag-
glomerations in which their ap-
pearance is somewhat changed,
these masses receiving distinct-
ive names. There seems to be
no way at picsc'it of distin-
guishing between a disease-pro-
ducing bacterium and harmless
one by sight.
It has lately been proven ex-
perimentally that calamel may
be decomposed in the human
system with the formation of
corrosive sublimate—a power-
ful poison.
Observations by M. I/uuIanie,
of Toulouse show that some-
thing very tuberculosis is pro-
duced in thelungs of dogs by
,1 neiiiatiod worm.
Recent borings indicate the
existence of workable coal-
scams underneath London.
In view of the ravages of the
! phylloxera, which have scrious-
1 ly interfercl with vine-growing,
i a French agriculturist has
' sought to discover a substitute
| for the vine, and is said to have
; obtained very good results with
a variety of red beet. This beet
yields a wine which is said to
i be equal to many of southern
' growth, and the plant has the
I advantage of being adapted to
all soils and climates.
Thk Houston Post's special
j edition of the 1st of March is at
hand. It is a large eight page-
paper, two of which are devoted
to a new and large map of Tex-
as. It contains a va.st amount of
information about Ttxas in a
concise and handy shape. The
publishers have displayed great
dilhgence 111 collecting and col-
lating the matter and are to be
congratulated upon having
made their special edition <1 suc-
cess. It will answer the purpose
of a gazetccr of Texas.
'1 in Kvening Club, a daily |
evening paper is to be started
at hurt Worth 011 the 4th 111st.
I'ort Wortli is a splendid place
for starting newspapers—hardly
a month passes that a new pa-
per is not started. Some of
them get out three or four is-
sues and others last a month or
two. The Democrat-Advance
supplies the demand for a daily
paper at the h'ort, and it is an I
excellent one.
It is said that there is a move-
ment among the republicans cfj
Illinois to elect Hob Lincoln
United States senator in the
place of David Davis. It does!
not appear that Lincoln has
done anything to entitle him to
the senatorship, but then he is
a son of old Abe's and that
goes a good way with the re- i
publicans.
