Sort All St..
G,
lord Chief Justice and "Journalists."
The? lord chief justice of England
is ft friend of the newspaper and ef
newspaper men. It is pleasant,
therefore, to have him take a iUmd
on that much abused word," "journ-
alism.'" Holding, also, as is well
known, sonic strong opinions on the
seamy side of company promoting,
he gave expression to some very
mightily winged words in a ease
where a person describing himself
as a "financial journalist" played a
conspicuous but none too creditable
part. The court praised the journ-
alistic profession, but broadly inti-
mated that many who claim to be-
long to it are, like the person who
stood before him, no more journal-
ists than a janitor of a courtroom is
o, member of the bar. "The proflig-
ate dishonesty of such men," said
his lordship, "brings the press with
which they are connected into con-
tempt and disgrace, and nobody
feels this more than journalists
themselves." Commenting on this,
the Loridon Chronicle says: "Just
as a certain class of women always
appear in a police court as 'actress-
es.' so the honorable profession of
letters is vilified by the blackmailers
and financial tipsters who describe
themselves in the law courts as
'journalists.' It is not always the
case that they have even any connec-
tion, as the particular man in point
had, with any reputable paper; but
when they have it makes the case, if
possible, worse."
The Best Liniment—" Chamberlain's Pa!n
Balm is the finest on earth/' writes Edwards
A Parker of Plains, Ga. This is the verdict
of all who use it. For rheumatism, lame
bsck, sprains, swellings, and the numerous
slight ailments and accidents common to
every household, this liniment has no equal.
With it in the. house a great deal ef pain and
suffering may be avoided. For sale by R. B.
Luhn.
La* ton Had "Cifnrs lo Burn."
"Billy" Jackson, of Willimantic,
Cotfn., who went to Cuba with the
Twelfth, regulars, was in the divis-
ion commanded by General Lawton
at the taking of El Caney. Gener-
al Lawton was looked upon as one
of the officers who by their bravery
and other good qualities won the af-
fections of the men. "At El Caney,"
relates a Williamantic paper, "when
the men were lying down in the tall
grass, with a storm of Spa 1-
lets sweeping overhead, each man
wishing every spear of grass was a
rock or a tree, General Lawton
came loping down the lane on his
big white horse, his white sombreror
flapping in the breeze, and smoking
a cigar. He jollied the boys lying in
the grass, saying: 'Don't you care,
boys; those Spaniards can't shoot io
hit" anything. They are a lot of
muffs.' Just then a bullet knocked
the cigar from Lawton's lips, while
another struck his horse in the
flank. 'Hang em,' said Lawton,
'they have spoiled my cigar. But
I've cigars to burn.' And he took
from his pocket another weed and
calmly lighted it."
Blf Hearted Old "Dick" Thompson.
When the late Richard W. Thomp-
son was at the head of-the navy de-
partment under the Hayea adminis-
tration, the secretary of Congress-
man Leopold Morse, of Massachus-
etts, called on him, at Mr. Morse's
request, to inquire if something
could not be done for a young man,
then resident in Boston, who was an
applicant for an appointment as a
cadet in the navy, but whosQ appli-
cation had been rejuected by the
medical examining board because of
a physical infirmity. The young
man was the son of a widowed moth-
er whose husband had served gal-
lantly in the navy, and who had died
in the service. After all the cir-
cumstances of the case had been re-
lated to Secretary Thompson, ho
consulted the record and straight-
way issued the following order:
"Physical disqualification waived in
this case. The navy needs more of
this young man's fighting blood."
So the appointee is today a gallant
officer in the navy, and is as ublc-
bodied as he is gallant. .

Decreasing Birth Rale.
The birth rate in the United
States is gradually decreasing, this
diminution being due to both the
white and black races. For the last
100 years this decimal loss is record-
ed as having, gone on. Official fig-
ures show that increase for our to-
tal population was 30.08 per cent
from 1870 to 1880, 24 per cent from
1880 to 1890, while it is believed
that this decade will only show an
increase of 18.94 per cent.
