Fro* the Earth's Heat.
"A distinguiuhed scientist has se-
rioualy suggested (he sinking of boil-
era deep enough to use the heat of
the earth as fuel,'' said a prominent
engineer, recently.
That sounds fantastic, in view of
the fact ihat a depth of 12,000 feet
would be necessary to boil water, but
a scheme of the same sort was urged
with great energy back in the 'Gus
by a Washington inventor named
Forain. If my memory is correct,
Jorain was a man of considerable
means and a mathematician of-abil-
ity. The internal heat of the earth
is supposed to equal about 1 degree
to the-10Q.feet of penetration, but he
claimed to have discovered that the"
percentage was very much greater
and increased in compound ratio af-
ter a certain depth was reached, lie
figured out an elaborate table and
proposed to sink a huge tjhaft with
'accumulators at the , bottom, from
which unlimited steam would lie sup-
plied to the surface. All that was
needed wag a few million - dollars
capital to pay for the digging and
the plant, and he immediately set ro
work to raise the amount. Forain
succeeded in interesting a number of
people of wealth and formed a> joint
stock company, but meanwhile "bin
calculations were assailed by scien-
tists and it was shown pretty clearly
that the figures wire incorrect., ITc
replied with great bitterness and the
consequence was that the scheme
went to pieces in the shock of contro.
rersy.
"What became of Forain; I don't
know. If the problem is actually
solved, I suppose he will be fished
•ut of the limbo of crrfnks and Tis*
ionaries to take hie proper place in
history."

The Park Avenue hotel, at
Fourth avenue and Thirty-third
street, New York, has passed into
new management. It was leased
last week for ten years for nearly
$1,000,000. This rental is S5 per
cent more than was paid for the
last ten years. The edifice wai
built by Alexander T. Stewart, who
intended it for a woman's hotel. It
has been a quietly fashionable hos-
telry for a uumber of years.
