There seems to be some uncer-
tainty about the races which were
announced to take place this after-
noon. Nobody seemed to be able
to give the reporter any definite in-
formation in regard to them. Tlio
impression, however, is that they
will take place. It is understood
that there will be at least one run-
ning race and two trotting matches.
There are numbers of idle boys
V j spend their time loafing around
the stairways of buildings smoking
cigaretts and traying to get into
unoccupied buildings. A number
of colored boys were observed yes-
terday afternoon prowling around
the old Bassett bank building and
looking to see if there was anything
they could get their hands on.
Ax **»ffort was made the other day

tory would not be run at a loss,
should it resume operations. The
number of pounds required per day
to pay expenses is 2500, but the can-
vassing committee failed to get
enough subscribers. One of the
stockholders informs the Banner
that there is a possibility that the
factory will be started up any way.

A WORD IN SEASON!
We desire to reduce our stock preparatory to receiving our fall stock, for which wc are
beginning to make arrangements, and we cordially invite the purchasers of
sir mis, sc.
To give us a call. Our prime object as merchants is to own reliable merchandise,, from
first hands, at their lowest price. This we secure by placing spot cash orders lor .such
quantities as command rock bottom figures. Our duty to our patrons demand a minim "in
rate of profit, which we follow as a rule. The lines we handle are in reality staple, ai'd
do not accumulate in bad stock at the end of the season, but we are always cleaned up t* >
make room for new goods, thus keeping our stock bright and new, our capital ever in mo-
tion, and avoiding all loss of interest. These are facts that cannot be gainsai l. They*
are placed bofore you fearl"ssly as the result, of our experience, and must commend them-
selves to shrewd buyers who can figure for results. Our cateer has been one of uninter-
rupted prosperity, and we are satisfied with the results ns our reward for honest, legiti-
mate, persevering endeavor. But while past efforts have proven so gratifying it is far
from our intention to rest upon our laurels; we shall continue in the future, as w§ have
in the past, to put forth every available force to retain our hold upon the confidence of our
patrons, and use every facility to increase our connection among intelligent, discriminat-
ing buyers. To any who may have listened to the seductive voice of misrepresentation
and untruth, which unworthy competition calls to its aid in its desire to emulate our sue-
to the business. These two j c^s, we would simply ask an honest, fair and unbiased comparison of prices, and rely with
young men have been in my j every confidence upon obtaining a verdict in our favor from the sound common sense
employment for a number of' and just discrimination of those who are most interested.
