A South African farmer who had
lost sortie cowg by the cattle plague
was fully persuaded that he had
•himself been attacked by tho epi-
demic. Forthwith, he hurried ofl
and consulted his medicnl man.
who tried to laugh him out of the
absurd notion, but to no purpose.
The farmer then went to an old,
well known practitioner, who, be-
ing a bit of a wag and seeing how
matters stood, entered minutely intc
the details of the case, expressed his
concurrence with the patient's views
and told him he could cure him.
The doctor thereupon wrote I
prescription, sealed it up, and tolc
tho farmer to go to a druggist ir
tho next town.
The farmer lost no time in going
with the prescription, but was some-
what startled when the druggisi
showed him the formula, which rai
thus:
"This man has the cattle plague
Take him into tho back yard and
shoot him, according to law."
That cured him.

FrtH tfcft Earth's Heat.
"A. distinguished scientist has se-
riously suggested the sinking of boil-
erg 'deep enough to use tho heat of
tho earth as fuel," said a prominent
engineer, recently.
"That sounds fantastic, in view of
tho fact that a depth of 12,000 feet
would bo necessary to boil water, but
a scheme of tho same sort was urged
with great energy back in the '00s
by a Washington inventor named
Forain. If my memory is correct,
Forain was a man of considerable
means and a mathematician of abil-
ity. The internal heat of tho earth
is supposed to equal about) 1 degree
to the 100 feet of penetration, but lie
claimed to have discovered that the
percentage was very much greater
and increased in compound ratio af-
ter a certain, depth was reached, lit-
figured out an elaborate table and
proposed to sink a huge shaft with
accumulators at the , bottom, from
which unlimited steam would be sup-
plied to the surface. All that was
needed was a few , million dollars
capital to pay for the digging and
the plant, and he immediately set to
work to raise the amount. Varan
succeeded in interesting a number of
people of wealth and formed a joint
stock company, but meanwhile his
calculations were assailed by scien-
tists and it was shown pretty dearly
that the figures were incorrect. 11c
replied with great bitterness and the
conscquence was that the scheme
went to pieces In the shock of contro-
versy.
"What became of Forain, I don't
know. If the problem is actually
solved, I suppose he will be fished
out of tho limbo of cranks and vis-
ionaries to take his proper placc in
historv."

You Can Buy One Cheaper Than Paying
Rent.
During the past few years fruit
growing and truck raising have
developed into great industries in
this Slate. When proper culture
antl care have been exercised big
money has been realized. Lands
which a few years apfo were regard-
ed as almost worthless are now
yielding from $50.00 to $250.00 per
acre where planted in fruit or
vegetables.
The cry from the Northern and
Eastern consumers is loud for
Texas fruits and vegetables. There
is no such thing as glutting the
market with the finest grade of
fruits and vegetables.
Texas fruits and vegetables are
loading these products from other
Statfs and the demand is increas-
ing each year. There are thousand
of acres of land ia Central East
Texas well adapted to these crops
convf utient to transportation lines
which can be bought cheaply on
long lime payments.
It has long puzzled the ordinary
mind to know why a well-to-do
tenant farmer will rent lands when
he can secure a home in the best
fruit 1 nd truck growing section of
Texas for lots than he pays annually
for rent.
If you desire further information
regarding these lands, their price
and locotion and terms on which
they can be seoured, write to the
Immigration Department of the
Houston East & West Texas Ry.,
Houston, Texas, stating just what
you want and you wilt secure full
particulars.
Th* Coming Vehicle.
"I expect to live to see tho day
when horses will not be allowed on
the downtown streets of New fork,"
said a man from that city the other
day. The speaker is a manufacturer
of automobiles. "During the ptt3t
year in the neighborhood of 500 Au-
tomobiles have been manufactured
in this country, and another 300 or
400 of foreign make havo been im-
ported. You must bear in mind
that American automobile manu-
facture is only in its infancy. Next
year 4,000 or 5,000 vehicles will be
manufactured and placed upon tho
market. The demand will far exceed
tha output. If I had 5,000 trucks I
could sell them during tho next
twelve months, and would not have
to exert myself in doing it. Al-
though present appearances would
not indicate it, the antomobilo
manufacturer bases his hope for the
future on auto-trucks instead of
pleasure vehicles." k 1
Cooking With Electricity.
In Utica, N. Y., a block of new
apartment houses aro just being
furnished with complete' installa-
tion of electrio cooking utensils in
each flat. The elcctrical kitchen
furniture contiste of three round
platters or "stoves," an oven and a
broiler. It is declared, apparently
with reason, that meats broiled on
the electrio gridiron are much mora
palatable than those charred and
scorched in the ordinary way over
hot coals. The most remarkable
feature of these electrical kitchens
ia that the stores, etc., are simply
placed on an ordinary kitchen table,
and when the cooking is completed
can be stowed away in a convenient
closet, leaving the kitchen free of
sven a trace of cookery.
