A party of young men find

and every eye was wide open for an
artistic subject. Suddenly the
whole party dismounted with vari-

surprise.
Just within the fence on tha left
grow innumerable graceful stalks,
each bearing aloft globes of pale
green that shaded into gray and

Lord Rosebery's '"Good Story."
In a recent English biography ap
pears an anecdote told in the charac
teristlc English rrnni.i t. The writer
remarks: "Lord Roscbery told a very
good story (for l.e 1* always amusing)
about a gentleman who was traveling
in the southern Vr.il id Slates. The
visitor was being sh:.vv] by a negro
barber and noticed the extreme blunt
ness of the razor.
" 'Yes, sir,' said the barber, 'it is

How to Quiet a Horse.
When a witness in an English '-curt

on a horse's head when he was down
to keep him quiet, the Judge replied:

DEATH OF JOHN H. HEAGAN.
Judge John H. Reagan, soldier,!
patriot and statesman, died at
his home near Palestine on the
6th instant, after a brief illness j
with pneumonia, aged 86 years.
His funeral took place on Wed-
nesday afternoon under the aus-
pices of the Masonic order.
John H. Reagan was the sole
survivor of the cabinet of the
I Confederate States of America, a
senator of the United States of
Amerioa, and chief among the
heroes who fought and served
under the flag of the republic of
Texas.
Having served with distinction
under three flags, and held posi-
tions as high as his environments
permitted, the death watoh of
Judge Reagan, known as the
"Grand Old Man of Texas," has
been, figuratively speaking, par-
ticipated in by the whole people
of the South and thousands in
the North, who have oome to
recognize the character that has
made him so loved and respected
in his home. Up to and until
within the past few years Judge
Reagan had served as chairman
of the railroad commission of
Texas, to accept which position
he resigned from the United
States senate.
He was born in Sevier county,
Tennessee, October 8, 1818; in
1838 he oamo to Texas, and en-
wo. ' listed to repel the advance of the
Cherokee Indians against the
white settlers, He was selected
by General Albert Sidney Johns-
ton to command a picked escort
on dangerous service, and served
with such gallantry that he was
offered a commission in the army
of the United States. This op
portunity he deolined, and was
later appointed as deputy our
veyor of the public lands of
Texas.
In 1844 he commenced the
study of law and was admitted to
tho bar the year following the
the annexation of Texas to the
United States.
With the organization of the
state governments Texas, Judge
Reagan entered into the political
arena. He was first selected to
serve as probate judge of Hend
erson county, and later, in 1848,
sent to the legislature, where he
served as chairman of the mosl,
important committee, , that on
public lands. In 1849 he was
defeated as a candidate for the
state senate.
In 1856 he was elected to rep-
resent his district in the con
gress of the United States as a
democrat, after a political fight
that was as severe as any up to
that time known in the South
He served with distinction unti
1861, when he resigned with
others from the seceding states
He was selected as a delegate
to the secession convention, anc
with the end of the deliberation
of that body his service under
the flag of the Confederacy com
menced. On March 6 following
he was appointed postmaster
general of the provisional gov
ernment, and next year to the
same position under the perma-
nent government. As, one by
one, the other members of the

Children especially are fond of dainties,
and the housekeeper must look carefully
to their food.
As good cake can be made only with
good eggs, so also a cake that is health-
ful as well as dainty must be raised with
a pure and perfect baking powder.
Royal Baking Powder is indispensable
in the preparation of the highest quality
of food. It imparts that peculiar light-
ness, sweetness and flavor noticed in the
finest cake, biscuit, doughnuts,, crusts, etc.,
and what is more important, renders the
food wholesome and agreeable to young
and old.

Moral Imbeciles.
As the outcome of much painstak-
ing Investigation the existence has
been demonstrated cf a class of hu-
man beings called moral Imbeciles.
Their essential characteristic fa .com-
plete moral insensibility, revealed by
a total absence of repugnance to the
of the state. • His resignation, on
account of advancing old age,
cam( because of no lessening of
mental powers, but simply to se-
cure a period of rest for the de-
clining period cf hie life,
Up to within the past year he

Addressing Letters for Italy*
A correspondent in Italy advises
those who send letters io friends in
that country to write only the initials
of the first name, because it is quite
customary in Italy to place the sur-
name first, which leads to many mis-
takes when letters are asked for by;
foreigners.
