VEBMOHT DISCARDS PROHIBITION
Prohibition lost and local op-
tion won a notable fight on Feb-
ruary 2, when Vermont voted
against the former and for the
latter.
In an election in which about
60,000 votes were cast prohibi-
tion was torn out of the state
constitution and a license law
adopted in its stead, but the ma-
jority was only about 1,500.
The movement against prohi-
bition has been growing for
years in Vermont, and it domi-
nated the last election for gover-
nor, in which there were two
Republican candidates, P. W.
Clement, representing the local
optiou wing of the party, and
Gen. J. G. McCullough the pro-
hibition wing. Clement was de-
feated, but when the legislature
met an act was passed submit- j dead near Beaumont

The Maine law was passed in
Rhode Island in 1852 also, in
Connecticut in 1854, and in New
Hampshire, New York, Miohigan
and Iowa in 1855. It was, how-
ever, later discarded in most of
these states. New York seems
to have settled the liquor ques-
tion with the Raines law, whioh
proved an immense revenue pro-
ducer, and has decreased the
number of saloons. Maine, New
Hampshire, Kansas and North
Dakota are the only states re-
maining in the prohibition col-
umn. There is hardly a doubt
that the decision of Vermont was
influenced by the long-continuing
contests in the neighboring states
of Maine and New Hampshire.
In Maine prohibition is a part of
the constitution, but it is astatute
in New Hampshire, this latter
state having decided in 1888
against engrafting it in the con-
stitution by a vote of 30,976 to

"It ia five or six years since I first felt the ef-
fects of kidney trouble. During that time I
hare had some very severe attacks, often be-
ing laid up for days at a time, not able to
work at all. To etoop caused excruciating
pain; I could not sleep or rtst at night wit
any comfort; felt tired and unrefreshed in
the morning ; everything I undertook to do
was a drag. I waa glad when the day was
over; and there was also a distressing and
annoying weakness of the kidney secretions
^ which was particularly noticeable at night.
I used medicines of various kinds and was
treated by doctors but received no relief
whatever I was laid up for nearly three
weeks juft tx-fore I went to Jos Tri?tram's
for Doan's Kidney Pills and commenced the
: treatment. Three days elapsed before I
! noticed any improvement, but after that the
; pain gradually grew less and less until it
; disappeared. It is about two months since I
