MANIFESiaTIONS of courage.
People Who Are Ilrave In Some Ways
and Cowards in Other#.
"Courage," said the story teller,
"is something which I have always
found it difficult to define. I have
known woinea who were tli*3 most
cowardly creatures under the sun to
do amazingly brave and daring acts
under certain conditions. I have
seen men, too, who knew that they
were not brave, rise in emergencies
and prove themselves heroic
"But the most interestin
about tliis subject is that phase of a
mans character which makes him
absolutely fearless in tlio face of
many dangers, and yet makes him a
thing
Farm Village*.
Among the schemes to make the lot erf
American farmers a happier one is that
of having the agriculturists of a neigh-
borhood build their homes clustered t- -
gether in a village, from which they
could go out daily to their toil in the
fields. By clubbing together they might
have their handsome little township hall
decorated so that it could he used ai a
theater, concert room or clubhouse. By
the co-operative method they might also
enjoy sidewalks, lighted streets and
many of the advantages of city life.
The village might be built around the 1
postoffice and corner grocery, or the
postofficfe and grocery might be brought
to the farm village. By this means
farmers' families would always be in
easy reach of doctor and preacher, and
could have, so far as their means went
opportunities for as much social pleasure
as falls to the lot of the city dwellers

alone in his life which prove his:
courage.
"He was once in a gathering of
women when a dog, showing marked i
signs of rabies, came running at;
them. A bull terrier was with the i
people, and the strange dog snapped J
indiscriminately at the terrier and I
the women. Its actions were quick j
as lightning and so terrifying to the I
women that several of them were on ,
the point of fainting and the others;
shrieked wildly. If you have never
seen a mad dog you can have no idea ;
of its terrible aspect and of ihe dread
which it inspires. But almost as
soon as this enraged animal had
leaped into the group, and even be-
fore the terrier, which would tight
anything, had jumped for it, Ibis

me to think that the monkey might
he domesticated and made useful to
man. There are many things that
he can do which no other domestic
animal could possibly learn to do.
For example, he could lie taught to
pick fruit, and his agility would en-
able liiin to do this in a way that
nothing could compete with him.
He could easily be taught to watch
the premises at night. His quick ear
and eye and his noiseless step would
make him excel in such a thing; and
it is surprising bow easily they can
be taught these things. Yet 1 do not
mean to say that an individual could
be taught these things, but a succes-

on a large platform in 0110 of the
public halls of the city, and an en

to onlookers. At the hour appointed
the expectant beholders saw the two
champions ride up on magnificent
steeds to the table. With their left
hands they held tbe reins, and with
their right the cue. Tbe game lasted
