FRANCIS SCOTT KEY'S SONG.
Kaw JTacU m to the Orl*ln of "The 8t»r
Spangled Banner.**
Thi following leaf from the liis-
torypf the county seat of Princo
George'soonnty, Md., has been care-
fully preserved by an old inhabitant
of Marlboro, and now for the first
time is given to the public:
The day the British army passed
Marlboro en route from Benedict to
Washington Dr. William Beanos, a
prominent physician and citizen of
Marlboro, was dining a party of his
friends athisrosidonce, among tliem
Dr. William Hall and Mr. Philip
Weems. Excitement in the neigh-
borhood ran high, and a fooling of
intense hostility was awakened
against the soldiery, who, during
their ascent of the Patuxent and
their march across tho country, had
acted more like a party of marauders
than a disciplined army. Tho main
body of the army on the day refer-
red to encamped at the "Wood
Yard," about five miles from this
place, and a party of stragglers
roamed into Marlboro.
Some of the convivial guests of
Dr. Beanes, seeing tho redcoats in
town, suggested that tho party go
out and arrest them, and the sug-
gestion was adopted and put into ex-
ecution without delay. When they
•were released, they hastened to ro
join the army androported the treat-
ment they had received in Marlboro,
and a squad was sont hack to arrest
the ringleaders of tho arresting par-
ty. Accordingly Drs. Beanes and
Hill and Mr. Weems were taken into
enstody and hurried off to Bristol,
somo miles from Marlboro, on tho
Patuxent, at which place Admiral
Cochrane's flagship lay at anchor.
As a special indignity Dr. Beanes
was forced to rido tho entiro dis-
tance on a barobacked horso.
When theywero taken on ship-
board and tho caso was reported to
Admiral Cochrano, ho was disposed
at first to uso severe measures with
tho prisoners, but better counsel pro-
vailed, and whon tho ship reached
Benedict Dr. Hill and Mr. Weems
wore released. Dr. Beanos, however,
did not faro bo well. Ho was re-
tained on tho ship and carried to
Baltimore, which had been marked
for destruction.
At that timo Francis Scott Key,
who was a nephew of Dr. Beanes,
was residing in Georgetown, D. C.,
wliero ho was a prominent member
of a gloo club, which was composed
of what was then tho best musical
talent of tho place. Hearing of tho
arrest and detention of his uncle,
ho hastened to tho scene of tho
approaching conflict and wont
aboard the ship undercover of a flag
of truce to secure if possible his re-
lease, and thero ho was detained
during tho bombardment of Fort
McHonry.
Chit of the hopes and fears of his
temporary imprisonment wero born
the sentiments of tho song that has
made him famous. After tho bom-
bardment ho was sent ashore, but
Dr. Beanes was carried to Halifax,
whero he remained it prisoner for
over a year. After his release he
returned to his old homo in Marlbo-
ro, whore ho died in 1828, agod 80
years. His gravo may bo seen at
Marlboro today on what is known as
Academy hill.
Whon Mr. Key returned to George-
town, so tho story runs, at tho first
meeting of his glee club thereafter
ho related to his companions the
thrilling experiences of his solf im-
posed confinement, and tho sugges-
tion was immediately made that he
commit the incident to verso. Tho
suggestion was acted upon, and the
"Star Spangled Banner" was road
amid great applause at their next
meeting. It was first sung by them
to the air of an old Lutheran hymn.
Thus it will be seen that tho circum-
stances from which came tho soul
stirring words of our national song
grew out of a thoughtlessly precipi-
tated incident that occurred in Marl-
boro.—Washington Post.
Napoleon's Birthplace.
A correspondent sends us tho fob
lowing account of Corsica: "Wo love
the country and tho people, but the
country is as wild as tho interior of
Africa, with variable climate. Dirt
exists to such a degroo that you can-
not walk a stop without stopping
into filth. Stonch prevails in every
corner, even in the street of Ajaocio
leading to Napoleon's birthplace. In
country inns no sanitary arrange-
ments exist whatever, and you got
nothing to eat unless you telegraph
the day before. Brigands aro raro
indeed, but you must havo no quar-
rel with any man or oven look at
him disapprovingly, or ho gots mad
with anger and then beware. Yet
the country is marvelously beauti-
ful, and a trip in tbo latter part of
March, in April or early in May will
repay all incrodiblo inconveniences
and horrors."—London News.
