Reported Explosion of Buchanan's Gin
Boilers False.
There waa a report current on
the streets of Brenham Friday to
the effect that the boilers at J. P.
Buchannan's gin on the Brazos
exploded late Thursday evening
and that several workmen were
injured.
A telephone message from Mr.
Buchanan's farm late Friday
evening stated that the report
was untrue. A steam pipe
bursted about a week ago and at
that time the fireman's foot was
badly scalded. The negro went
to Hempstead Friday for medical
treatment, hence the report.
When asked regarding the con-
dition of the rice crop, Mr. Buch-
anan stated that the same was
practically lost as he had been
unable topump water out of the
riverjwith which to give the plant
the necessary flooding. Rice
must be well flooded and as the
summer has been very dry the
crop had to depend entirely upon
the|river. The pumps have been
constantly breaking down and
the river in bad shape and little
water has been pumped.
The cotton crop in that section
is in good condition and opening
rapidly. The boll weevils are
scarce and doing no damage and
with the excepion of alight shed
ding the cotton crop bids fair to
yield a heavy harvest. The
picking is beginning and the
gins will be rnnning in full blast
in a short while.

The readers of this paper will bo pleased
to learn that there is at least one dreaded
disease that science has been able to cure in
all its stages, and that is Catarrh. Hall's
Catarrh Cure is the only positive cure known
to the medical fraternity Catarrh being a
constitutional disease, requires a constitu-
tional treatment. Hall's Catarrh Cure is
taken internally, acting directly upon the
blood and mucous surfaces of the system,
thereby destroying the foundation of the dis-
ease, and giving the patient strength by
building up the constitution and assisting
nature in doing its work. The proprietors
have so much faith in its curative powers
that they offer One Hundred Dollars for any
case that it fails to cure. Send for list ot

Hall's Family Pills are the best.
At a meeting of the cotton

purpose of making arrangements

Athletic Club Tenders the Visiting Young
Ladies a Dance Last Night.
The visiting young ladies in
the city were tendered a compli-
mentary hop at the club rooms
of the Brenhum Athletic club
last night and some twenty coup-
les were in attendance enjoy-
ing of the evening's pleas-
ures.
Dancos have been numerous
this summer and the visitors
have had a merry time. While
the weather has been exceed-
ingly warm, still thia has not
prevented an unusually large
number of these evenings of in-
dulgence in keeping timej to
the excellent dance music that
has been furnished.
No place in Texas entertains
her guest9 more royally than
does Brenham and the visitor
who once enters our midst never
fails to return again. This sum
mer has brought a larger num
ber than previous seasons have
given and a continued round of
receptions, dances, etc. has been
the result.
Last night was pleasant and
the music by the Second Infantry
orchestra was splendid and it was
a late hour ere the golden notes
of "Home, Sweet Home" usher
ed another evening of pleasure
into memory's sacred treasure
house.

Sevral changes in the furnaces
and oil burners at the oil mill
have been in progress for several
days. The heat was not as well
distributed as it should have
been and Superintendent Ahren-
beck set about to make the re-

now very noticeable and the heat
completely envelops the big
boilers from one end to the other,
where formerly the fronts re-
ceived a greater amount than
the rear ends.

THE MANBATTAN WELL.

The Tweenty-Second Gusher Come in j
Thursday Evening
Friday's papers brought the
news that the Manhattan com-
pany had brought in their long
looked for well on Spindle Top
Heights which made the twenty-
second gusher on the hill.
The well was finished with a
four inch pipe and is pronounced
equal to any producing well in
the field. The well has been de-
layed by numerous accidents for
nearly a month and the news of
its arrival in good shape was
quite gratifiying to a good many
Brenhamites.
Manhattan stock was sold
largely in this city and there are
a great many of our citizens who
now boast of owning a "gusher."
The stock did not seem affected
by the arrival of the well and it
is thought that that there will be
a great many here who will sell
their etook at the original cost.
The policy of the directors of
the Manhattan company is very
conservative, and as the capital-
ization is rather low and they are
making an effort to dispose of the
product it is reasonable to sup-
pose that the stock will advance
in a short time.
Another Mad Dog.
A mad dog made his appear-
ance in Watrousville Friday
morning shortly before the noon
hour and for about fifteen minu*
utes the inhabitants along his
course of travel were kept climb-
ing trees, fences etc., and leav-
ing safe distances between them-
selves and this vicious visitor.
His appearance was made
along the Central tracks and by
chance he turned south and
headed directly towards the
Blinn college. He attacked
several dogs but it is believed
that none were bitten. He was
finally killed by a negro boy
who was returning from a hunt
in the suburbs.
Messrs. Jim Curry and Burney
Dunlap, both of this city, have
secured lucrative positions as
cotton buyers with the McFad*
dens. Curry will represent the
irm at Victoria.
In aocordanoe with previous
announcement the Postal Tele*
1 ;raph office opened Thursday.
County Treasurer C. F. Herbst
sent the first message out over

Antonio.
The Santa Fe has issued a cir-
cular to all agents announcing

New Building.
Mr. H. H. Williams, an ar-
chitect and builder of Caldwell,
has closed a contract with
Mr. E. H. Barnett,* of this
city, for the ereotion of a
handsome two-story residence
on his lot on West Sandy street,
work to begin with the least
possible delay.
Some prowler stole Mr. Wm.
Eldridge's horse from his lot last
Thursday night and gave him
such a severe riding that the
horse died early Friday morning.
This is becoming a common oc-
currence in Brenham. About
three weeks ago, as th® BANNER
scribe was wending his way
homeward at the lonely midnight
hour he was surprised to see a
colored hostler drive out of a lot
a surry with a pair of spanking
black horses hitched to it, and
dash down the Btreet towards
the city. The gates were left
open across the sidewalk.
Again, a certain livery man
will find it to his advantage to
keep a watch on his stable at
night.
Ben Connor was landed in the
county jail Friday charged with
the theft of the sum of $14 from
Wiley Black. He will likely be
given a hearing before Eaquire
Chappell this morning.
