Some thousands years ago a celebrated Chinese Phi-
losopher pointing to the west, prophesied that from
thence should come the hope and regeneration of the
world. The ideaj-ii may be. gave birth to the line of
the poet,
' A'cstwiul :hf star nf Empire lakes its way.'"
Certain it is whether it be to Christianity, or to ihe pro-
gress of art, science and commerce that we look for tin
march of civilization, the West has steadily expanded
into a broader and brighter field of deve-Jopement anc
triumph, while the East, which was erst ihe Gardri.
of God and the paradise of man. has as steadily reced-
ed into darkness and inanity.
Slowly but surely, from as far back as we can trac
history, the great empire of the world has been tend
ing westward. It has at length crossed the lasl ocean,
discovered the farthest hemisphere, and soon, pushing
itself against the shores of the Pacific, will pause and
rise to a power, intelligence and splendor in all that is
ennobling and happifying to man, such as the world
of.thepast hasuever known. The day-star of the race
and of nations is no longer in the East. Brighter than
the sun the adorfngmagi worship, the "West reveals its
light, which -is ere long to react and- illumine the
whole earth. New YorTc Sun.
To show that Gen. Taylor is a man of business, no
sooner had the Senate met on Tuesday the 6th till.,
than he sent up Col. Bliss with the catalogue of the
Cabinet. The Senate, after they had been an hour
or more iu session, appointed Messrs. Miller and Atch-
ison to wait on the President, to inform him that the
Senate were ready to hear from him. The committee
of two went up to the White House, where the follow-
ing scene occurred:
Mr.Atchison: Mr. President, the Senate have ap-
pointed Mr. Miller and myself a committee to wait up-
on you, to inform you that the Senate are now in ses
sion, ana are ready to receive any communication you
may have to make.
Now, it may bethat the old General supposed that
the Senate had got tired of waiting for the expected
message, Jin d that the committee had been sent up to
jog the memory of his Excellency: hence we suppose
his reply to the formal announcement of the commit-
tee. OH Zach. Good gracious! you don't tell me! wait-
ing all this time? Why. gentlemen, I sent up Colo-
nel Bliss two hours ago tothe Senate.
The committee were stumpt. Mr. Atchison was in
favor of reporting the fact; but they finally agreed to
go back and make no report at all, the promptitude of
old Zach doing away with the necessity. Meanwhile
Col. Bliss had gone up to the Senate, and awaiting a
pause in the proceedings, had put in his message in
advance of the return of the committee. This little in-
cident shows that Old Zach, though always polite, is
not the man to stand on ceremony when business is to
be done.
A woman was recently convicted of-stenlinga piece
of lindsey in Iowa, and the Justice sentenced her hus-
band to jail for the woman's offence!
Cold I?eet. Cold feet produces the most serious
diseases. The exercise of walking, or riding, or any
other active employment with regularity, in the use of
the cold bath, impart warmth to the feet. But when
one cannot take exercise, the best plan is to plunge
the feet into cold water once or twice a day, keep them
in the water only two or three seconds at a time, then
rub them dry with a coarse towel, and put on the usu-
al covering of socks or stockings. When the health
is too delicate to permit the use of the cold bath in
this manner, a little cayenne pepper sprinkled in the
stocking -soles, inside, will restore warmth to the feet.
The three most difficult things are to keep a secret,
to forget an injury, and to make good use of one's
leisure.
It is remarkable that the same year that gave birth to
Buonaparte, also 'gave birth to the Duke of Welling-
ton, to Ney, Soult and Lannes; to Mohammed Ali Pa-
cha, Viceroy of Egypt; to Cuvier, the naturalist; to Cha-
teaubriand; to the" two great travellers, Humboldt and
Clarke; to Lord Castlereagh, whom Lord Byron com-
pares to a "stream of blood and water;" to Dr. Middle-
ion, a learned bishop of Calcutta, as well as other dis-
tinguished characters. Perhaps no other year in the
history of the world has given birth to so many distin-
guished men.
Where is the hoe, Sambo?" "Wid de rake, massn."
"Well, where is the rake?" "Wid de hoe."' "Well,
well, where are they both?" "Why, bofftngedder, mas-
sa you 'pears to be berry 'ticlar ter-day!" "You can
start fishing, Sambo."
