The loss of the Brazilian warship
Holinioes is officially confirmed. The
vessel was too close to shore and
struck submerged rooks.

A telegram received from Castoria,

quests a boat be sent to their rescue.

At Pittsburg, during a meeting of
the Presbyterian ministerial associa-
tion, Rev. Dr. Parkhurst was severe-
ly attacked for visiting the haunts of
vice in the metropolis.
The secretary of war has authoriz-
ed chief engineers to use government
boats upon all Western rivers to save
human life where residents of flood-
ed districts are in danger.
Despite the assurance made by
the Duke of Westminster that hi3
horse Orme would start for the
derby stakes, it is announced the
entry has been cancelled.
The Fort Worth Gazette still
keeps the name of Lanham at its
mast head for Governor, but it does
all its fighting against Hogg, and it
hits him some hard blows.
QUESTIONS or VERACITY.
The Granbury News mentioas the
following instances in which Got.
Hogg's veracity is serioualy ques-
tioned :
"Gov. Hogg says the railroad em-
ployes have been coerced into op-
posing him The railroad employees
unanimously deny the accusation.
Here is a question of varacity. The
Governor says he has reclaimed over
one million acres of land from rail-
road;-. C'apt. Walsh says he has not. I
Here is another question of veracity.
Gov. Hogg says he was the fir9t man
to raise his voice in behalf of a Con-
federate home. The old soldiers say
he was not. Here is still another
question of veracity. The Governor
says tha passage of the commission
bill was delayed thirty days by the
work of the lobby. Cone Johnson
and other commission men resent
this as a slander on the legislature
and say it is not true. Here is a di-
rect and serious question of varacity.
Besides the subject of being ''em-
barrassed by a confederate record"
evolved itself into a question of
veracity and was then dropped.
Without taking sides either way in
any of these controversies, every one
must admit that serious questions of
veracity are involved. Was there
ever before in Texas the spectacle of
the Governor, the chief magistrate
of the people, being involved in such
numerous question of veracity
A dispatch from Tyler to the
Galveston News, of the 21st inst.,
says: "There is considerable excite-
ment in this city in regard to Gov-
ernor Hogg's speech delivered at
Bonham. in which he calls Charles
T. Bonner of Tyler a professional
liar, and some of the governors s
warmest friends are bitterly con-
demning him for his unjust remarks
and say they will not support him
for anything.
Charlie Bonner has been a citizen
of Tyler for more than twenty years.
There is not a man in Smith county
who stands higher for honesty and
integrity. He is a prominent mem-
ber of the Methodist church and as
a lawyer he ranks among the first of
the Tyler bar. He is one of the
most liberal, persevering and eater-
pristng men of the city.

Commiissioner of the General Land
office, and hopes that this county
will support him for the position.

The Houston Post claims to be
for a dark horse for Governor, but |
advisee that the fight be made!
against Gov. Hogg so as to lock the
on his record, the Yal Yerde land
suits, his connection with the I. & G.
N. receivership, the East Line re-
ceivership. The Yal Yerda land suit
was referred to. These suits, the
speaker said, would cloud the title
to many acres, and result in endless
litigation. Governor Hogg's state-
ment that he had recovered 1,200,000
acres was not true, but the maximum
was only 87,000 acres, and this is
barren sections and waste places.
The other lands, he seeks to recover
were farm lands and homes in Tar-
rant, Dallas, Parker and Denton
ton counties.
The Fort Worth Gazette savs:
"Every farm, every town, village
and hamlet, every mine, every inter-
est in Texas would feel the impulse
of a new life within thirty days after
the defeat of Governor Hogg for re
nomination. How or by what means
the governor has been made to stand
in Texas' way. it is bootless to dis-
cuss. A condition and not a theory
confronts Texas, and Texas should
not vote to impede its own progress
or to bankrupt mere of its own peo-
ple."
Alderman P. Levine, of Galves-
ton has been indicted by the grand
jury of that county, charged with
proposing to accept bribes in con-
nection with the street paving con-
tract. and has been admitted to bail
in the sum of 1500.
