Mississippi city, where the
| celebrated prize-fight took place
1 last Week, is described as con-
j sisting of a dilapidated summer
boarding house, a bar and bil-
liard room, a railway station
and a few out buildings, mostly
in a state of decay.
(Utile considerable number
ofboys sent to Virginia by the
Children's Aid Society of Xew
York, comparative few it seems,
have turned out well. Many
have run away to take ,up the
vagrant life of the cities; some
have got into jail; others were
discharged by their employers;
some few adapted themselves
to the rather harsh require
ments of farm life, and have at-
tained good positions as over-
seers, superintendents, &c.

Boston has about 500 char-
itable organizations, spending
$600,(>0() in private charities
and £400,000 in public char-
ities. The charitable capital of
the city is $50,000,000. They
have a fine business system of
examining the pleas of appli-
cants, and registers are kept of
all the deserving poor, while
frauds are almost immediately
exposed.
Eight years ago there was
only Si 20,000 invested in steam-
ers on the St. Johns, Florida,
Now there are twenty-eight
steamers plying on that river,
one of which cost £240,000 and
to this fleet constant additions
are making. The Indian River
and South Florida lakes and in-
lets are now dotted with sail-
boat-, carrying freight to and
fro. In a very short time these
will be supplimcnted by steam-
ers, and then a new region will
be opened of surpassing fertili-
ty and beauty.
The St. Louis Republican ha*
discovered some curious facts
connected with the tax records
of New York. The real estate
valuation for the present year is
S1,0.39,200,1.36 an increase of
$f>2,256,000. The personality
valuation is $268,98-',000, I lie
real estate is more than two and
a hall times as great as the value
of all the H-.il estatf in Missouri
$.106,000,000, but the personali-
ty is only a trifle more than one-
half greater than the value of
the personality in Missouri
$163,265,000, although there is
no spot in this continent where
so large an amount of personal
property in the shape of money,
stocks, notes, bonds, jewels
plate and furniture 1; crowded
together as in New \ ork.

This action, though natural
