On the 19th of July 1880 I
Miles Thompson, a negro aged
about 22 years, went to the
house of a widow lady named
Mrs. Johnson, who lived near
Hellville. It was about ten I
o'clock at night, he went to the
fence and calling her out asked
for work, she said she had none
for him ; he then asked lor some-
thing to eat and as she started
into the house he jumped over
the fence and caught her from
appointed judges. Tilting for
the rings commenced promptly
at S o'clock, the following nam-
ed knights contesting for the
honors: Willie Mclntyre,
Knight of the Kgyptian Pyra-
mid, taking four rings, time in-
side ol twenty seconds each
round , Willie Lusk, Knight of
the Mascotte, five rings, time

tention of the court had its ori-
gin about a woman. David
Vaughn was tried on the charge
of disturbing the peace and fined
$1 and the trimmingr, making
his bill amount to $1390,
Sandy Stchnenson was tried for
assault, fround guilty and fined

Hc made a motion for new a trial
which was granted by the court
and the case was set for a re-
hearing to day, Saturday. Rox-
cy Johnson, a lady, plead guilty,
and the court showed its gal-
lantry by asscsssing her fine at
one cent, but the constable who
is an adept in taxing up the
costs made out her bill for Si 2.-
41. The parties are all colored,
and Lickskillet as a well as
Camptown are colored settle-
ments.
Commissioners' Court.
on Friday, February 17 1S8
and the sentence was duly car-
ried into execution by Sheriff
J. H. 1 .ewis and Deputy Sheiiff
Glenn. The culprit was a bru-
tal and callous negro and until
the last did not seem to be at
all affected by the terrible doom
that awaited him. He was
I waited upon in jail by a colored,
preacher, and as usual with all
of his class got religion and
died in the firm conviction that
he was going straight to glory,
j A day or two ago a scaffold
was erected in the jail yard.
At one o'clock Sheriff Lewis
entered his cell and with deputy
i Glenn escorted him to the gal-
honor, selecting Miss Rosa
Simon, Mr. Testard crowned
Miss Leah Simon as second
maid ol honor.
Mr. Garrett presented the

ing a few appropriate remarks.

hall till they found the young
ladies of their choice and

before the commissioners in be-
half of the G. C. & S. F. rail-
way to ask that the county
taxes assessed against that com-
pany be remitted, in accordance
with an order of this court made
some years ago and by which
it was agreed that the Santa Fe
railroad company be exempted
from all county taxes for a
1 period of five years. The pres-

action of their predecessors as
I illegal and with the exception
| of one commissioner, who was a

against remitting the taxes.
